GOLDEN WEDDING

The golden wedding of Mr and Mrs William Cruickshank, of Wilson street, Geraldine, was recently celebrated at their home, the couple receiving during the day many congratulatory telegrams from friends and relatives in various parts of the Dominion. Mr Cruickshank was born in Toronto, Canada, 78 years ago, and after a visit to Scotland he came to Invercargill when four years of age with his parents in the sailing ship Great Britain. Mr Cruickshank's father settled in the Chatton district, near Gore, and was one of the pioneers of that district. In 1886 Mr Cruickshank married Miss Margaret Templeton Bain, the eldest daughter of Mr Thomas Bain, of Menzies Ferry, Wyndham, the officiating clergyman being the Rev. Robert Wood. Mrs Cruickshank hailed from Glasgow, where she was born in 1864, and came out to New Zealand 10 years later in the sailing ship Maria Bh..n, disembarking at Port Chalmers. For some time after their marriage the couple lived at Chatton, where Mr Cruickshank took up land and engaged in farming. Later they removed to Timaru, and about 12 years ago removed to reside at Geraldine. They have seven children—five sons and two daughters—five of whom were present at the celebration: Messrs William Cruickshank (Christchurch), George Cruickshank (Geraldine). Nelson Cruickshank (Timaru), Edgar Cruickshank (Blenheim) and Roy Cruickshank (Hamilton), and Mesdames William Richards (Timaru) and C Gliddon (Temuka).
