WOMEN'S DIVISION N.Z. FARMERS' UNION

Reports ol meetings ot branches are requested, but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be promised.

A pleasant afternoon was spent by the Merton branch of the W.D.F.U. on August 13, with Mrs E. White presiding. After correspondence and discussion an instructive talk was given by Mrs J. Hay on "Farm Poultry." An amusing competition was won by Mrs S. Williams.

The Tahatika branch met in the hall on Saturday evening. Mrs Roulston presided. Miss M'Nab was nominated to attend Country Girls' Week. Mrs Roulston won the competition, "A woollen article." with a knitted pullover.

The Milburn-Clarendon branch met at Milburn on August 13. Nominations for Country Girls' Week were Mrs J. Kane, jun., and Miss Duff. The president gave a summary of the July conference held at Wellington. A visitor gave a travel talk. Miss Petrie won the competition " Something from two skeins of wool." Hostesses were Mesdames Gardyne. Alex Carr and Arthur Carr.

At the meeting of the Clandeboye branch Dr A. S. M'lnnes, of Temuka, gave an address on "The Cause and Prevention of Hydatids." Mrs H. T. Dunn was in the chair. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of' the late Miss A. T. Somerville. the latter having been a member of the branch. Competition winners were: Miss E. Boocock. Mrs R. Sherriff and Misses E. Goodson and M. Drake. The hostesses were Mrs Bolderston and the Misses M. Kyne and Boocock.

The Henley branch met on August 13 in the hall. Miss Thelma Smith and Miss Frances Panting were elected to attend Country Girls' Week. The branch decided to travel *o Outram for the combined meeting. A lecture on "Gardening" was given h\ Miss Martin, who also solved some of their gardening problems for the members. The senior competition for "Cream sponge" was won by Mrs Hollands Miss Hollands won the junior competition for biscuits. Mrs Sinclair was also a prize-winner with a shopoingbag made from waste material. The hostesses were Mrs Home and Mrs Hunter.

The Clyde branch met on Friday, when Mrs Annan presided. Mr J. Ross gave an account of the programme enjoved by the Young Farmers during their week in Dunedin. Hostesses were Mesdames E. Attfield. Collins E W George and Paulin

The members of the Clinton branch spent an afternoon at the home and garden of Mrs W. K. Walker on Thursday last. Mrs Waddell demonstrated for an hour in the garden, "The Pruning of Roses." after which the members adjourned to the drawing room for afternoon tea, during which Miss Linklater gave a monologue. It was decided to send as delegates to the Girls' Educational Week in Dunedin Misses Webb. Linklater. and Rowe. Mrs Sheddan

and Miss Roy passed votes of thanks to Mrs Walker and Mrs Waddell for giving a delightful afternoon.

At Papanui, Cape Saunders, a branch has recently been formed. On Saturday afternoon the members and some visitors from Otakou branch met together to welcome Mrs Elliott. Otago provincial president of the Women's Division, and Mrs Drake, a Dominion vice-president. Mrs Elliott outlined the aims and ideals of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union and complimented the Papanui members on the initiative they had shown in organising a branch in such a recentlysettled district. Mrs Drake's tall? was on other aspects of the work of the Women's Division. Mrs S. G. Karetai, president of the Papanui branch, thanked the guests for their addresses

On Tuesday afternoon Miss Bonnie Apple, of Texas, and Miss M'Millan, of the Otago Home Science Extension Bureau, gave interesting lectures to the members of the Alexandra branch. Both spoke of the work being done by the Women's Divisions and institutes in America and on the Continent. Miss Apple illustrated her lecture with photographs and Miss M'Millan exhibited handwork done by the women of Sweden. The members then accorded these ladies a hearty vote of thanks for their instructive lectures. The monthly meeting of the branch was held in the Anglican Hall on the Monday, Mrs Fimmings, sen., presiding. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Craik in her recent bereavement. Mesdames Carl Iversen and Misses S. Cameron and G. Butler were appointed to represent the branch at Country Girls' Educational Week.
