DUNEDIN BURNS CLUB

MONTHLY SOCIAL .;// The monthly social of the Dunedin Burns Club was held last evening, when the annual " Sir Walter Scott. Night" was observed in an appropri- ( ate manner. The chairman (Mr N. Stewart), the vice-presidents, and the speakers for r« the evening were piped on to the platform by Piper G. Crighton. Mr Stewart extended a welcome to the visitors and new members pres-. ent, and expressed his pleasure at seeing such a large attendance. He welcomed members of the St. Clair Presbyterian Choir, who were to provide the greater part of the evening's programme- Apologising for the absence of the president (Mr G. Ctirrie),: the chairman announced that Mr Curne • was making a good recovery, and should be able to be present.at next, month's social. ' ... .\ '-'•'

A varied and entertaining, programme was presented by members of the St. Clair Presbyterian Choir under the baton of Mr Bert Rawlinson, and with Miss Ruby White -asaccompanist. A feature of the evening's programme was an interesting address' "The Ballads of Sir TOter ( Scott," by the Rev. R. G. M'Ddwall. Another outstanding ' item was- :the choir's number, "When Israel of the.. Lord Beloved," which was introduced by Mr John Bowie, who outlined the setting given to the song by Sir Walter Scott in his great classic, "Ivanhoe." The following was the programme presented:—Part song, "Border 1 Ballad," the choir; . song, "Where Hath Scotland?" Mr Rawlinson; violin solo, Miss E. White; humorous item, Mr C. Smith; part song, " O, Hush Thee," the choir; song, "To Mary in Heaven." '■ Mr John Kennedy; song, *•-Jock o' Hazeldene," Miss Edith Clare; recital, .-, Miss Nanna Newey; part song, "Hunt- - ing Song," the choir; song, " Over the Sea to Skye," Miss Doris Darracott: song, "Ho! Jolly Jenkin" (-"-Ivanhoe"),. Mr Rawlinson; and song, -■f "When Israel of the Lord Beloved,'the choir. At the conclusion of the concert r dance was held.
