Mr M. O. Barnes was a passenger by yesterday's first express on his return to Wellington. Mr J. B. Thomson passed through Dunedin by yesterday afternoon's express on his return to Invercargill. Mr A. C. Mills, accompanied by Mrs Mills, returned by the first express yesterday afternoon from a 15 months' tour of Great Britain and the Continent. _ _ Colonel S. C. P. Nicholls, D. 5.0., N.Z.S.C, officer commanding the Southern Command, arrived in Dunedin by yesterday aft. .noon's express. A Press Association cable message from Sydney states that Mr Abbey Jones, of the Southland News, is a passenger by the Mariposa, which sailed from Sydney for Auckland yesterday. The Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox), the Mayor of St. Kilda (Mr J. J. Marlow) and the chairman of the Tuapeka County Council (Mr J. Bennetts) left yesterday for Wellington to attend the New Zealand Centennial Conference. The assistant commissioner of pensions '.Mr H. Digby Smith) has been appointed commissioner in succession to Mr J. If. Boyes, who was recently appointed one of the Public Service Commissioners. Reference was made at last nights meeting of the Otago Swimming Centre to the outstanding success ol J. E. Lovelock at the Olympic Games, and, on the motion of the president (Mr W. A. Jenkins), it was decided that a letter be sent to Mr Lovelock congratulating him on his achievement. . • . „ At yesterday's meeting of the High Schools' Board of Governors a letter was received from Mrs F. M. Don resigning her seat on the board. The resignation was accepted, the chairman (Mr W. R. Brugh) remarking that he and the members were sorry to lose the assistance of Mrs Don, who, during the short period she had occupied a seat on the board, had taken a keen interest in its activities, and* had given good service. The members of the Otago Boys High School first fifteen left by train yesterday for Christchurch, where a match will be played to-day against the Christchurch Boys' High School team. Mr R. W S. Botting accompanied the team as manager, and Messrs F. H. Campbell, D. J. Calder and W. F. Watters went as representatives of the Old Boys' Society. The Union Airways airliner Korimako left the Taieri airport at 8.15 a.m. yesterday for Christchurch. Blenheim, and Palmerston North with Messrs J. W. Henderson for Christchurch, A. fa. Cookson, W. H. Boyes for Blenheim, and E. D. Burnard for Palmerston North. The Karoro arrived from the north at 1 p.m. with Mrs A. G. Gerrand from Palmerston North, Miss A. Andrews from Wellington, and Messrs A. Millow and H. Mander from Christchurch. ,„ _, , . , Principal Dickie, of the Theological Hall, left by yesterday's express en route for America, Great Britain, and Europe, a large attendance of ministers, friends, and students being present on the station platform to express their goodwill and wish him bon voyage. Principal Dickie has been granted by the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand a year's leave of absence on the occasion of 25 years' service at the Theological Hall, and during his visit to Scotland he will deliver the Gunning Lectures at the University of Edinburgh.
