CLASS DISTINCTION
“EXCLUSIVE” GOLF CLUBS
MR C. L. CARR’S COMPLAINT
(From Our Parliamentary Reporter)
WELLINGTON, August 18,
The “ exclusiveness ” of certain golf clubs was the subject of comment by Mr C. L. Carr (Govt., Timaru), in giving notice of a question to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr W. E. Parry, in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Carr asked whether the Minister’s attention had been drawn to a statement in the press that golf clubs were excluding working people from membership, even though the high fees asked for were offered. Many of "those clubs were allowed certain concessions because they were supposed to provide facilities for a popular sport, and Mr Carr requested an investigation of the matter with a view to having either the concessions or the membership restrictions removed. Municipal authorities were quite unable to provide adequately for those who could not afford high fees or who might be excluded from membership of private clubs on the grounds of class distinction.
