CARPENTERS AND JOINERS
MEETING OF AMALGAMATED SOCIETY A meeting of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, Otago branch, was held on Monday last. The assessor who represented the district in the recent Conciliation Council proceedings submitted his report. There was general dissatisfaction expressed, and a desire to find some method of having the agreement withdrawn and the case reopened The secretary was instructed to get in touch with all other affiliated unions in the association to further this object. It was decided that delegates on the Labour Day Association be instructed to urge that Labour Day be made a day to celebrate the Labour victory, and that a procession should be formed in which trade unions and Labour Party branches should march with their banners to one of the local reserves and then carry out their usual sports and picnic. A resolution was earned “ That this branch of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners extends its sympathy and moral support to its fellow workers in Spain in their heroic struggle to defend their democratic liberty agamst the military Fascist butchers of finance capital, and expresses its sincere hope that the Spanish Government will be successful in overcoming the Fascist rebels.” It was resolved to forward a copy of this resolution to the Spanish Consul in Wellington and the Spanish Government. The organiser reported on his visit to South Otago and Oamaru. He also stated that wherever he went the expression of opinion was in favour of one union for all building trade workers. It was stated that the membership of the branch was now 699, which is not yet the full total in Otago.
