OTAGO POWER BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago Electric Power Board was held at Milton yesterday, when there were present: Messrs R. H. Michelle (in the chair), G. Moore, J. K. Simpson, D. Boyd, A. E. Russell, W. C. Arkle and W. Lee. CORRESPONDENCE The city electrical engineer (Mr M. C, Henderson) advised that during July a total of 636,480 units had been supplied to the board. —Noted. The secretary of the Electric Power Boards’ Association forwarded a copy of the agenda paper of remits to be dealt with at the forthcoming conference.—Received. FINANCIAL STATEMENT The financial statement showed that receipts for the month totalled £4253 17s 6d, including sales of electricity £4046 9s 2d, and the expenditure amounted to £14,451 9s Id, including £6154 interest, £3170 sinking fund and £3637 power costs. Accounts amounting to £1771 4s 9d were passed for payment. ENGINEER’S REPORT The engineer (Mr'R. D. Veitch) submitted the following report:— . Northern Area.—High and extra high tension: Above Port Chalmers a fault on the 33kv. circuit was repaired. Power was off in the area from 7.30 till 11 p.m. on August 7 as a result, the delay in repairing being occasioned by a tree blown across the road to the fault. At Purakanui six poles have been reblocked. At Waitati and ari “ tane 6kv. fuse bases have been changed. At Evansdale wires have been resagged. A 90 k.v.a.r. bank of condensers has been installed at Waitati and a 180 k.v.a.r. bank at Palmerston, the total for the area being 270 k v.a.r., raising the power factor at full load from .82 to .98. At Karitane the transformer at Mr Taine’s 20 k.v.a. is being shifted to the saleyards, Palmerston, and replaced by a 10 k.v.a. and the reticulation adjacent to Mr Taine's is being converted to single phase, allowing of a better use being made of the copper in the system. An extra 10 k.v.a. sub has been installed near Paratas and erected to permit of extension. The Sanatorium tap off at Palmerston has been resagged and a stay pole fitted. Low tension: Reconstruction has been undertaken at Karitane, 7/14 copper having been erected in place of 7/16 and number 8 At Karitane, Hawksburn Bush and Flag Swamp services have been changed to all covered phase wires. The low tension at the Sanatorium has, like the high tension, been resagged. Trees menacing the lines at Palmerston have been cut down. At Mimwaka a fuse was replaced and one pole straightened up and blocked. At Waitati one new pole was erected to give better road clearance. Ties have been renewed at Evansdale, and a broken telephone binder replaced at pole 14, main line. At Waitati sub. 6.6kv. fuses have as usual been made up in spare time, and also at this sub, metering gear has been repaired. At Seacliit and Omimi, services have received attention in the form of resagging. Southern Area.—Poles have been erected in the main line in readiness for the replacing of three defective poles at Berwick and six at the back of Lake Waihola. Services in Milton Borough have been constructed, repaired, and rewired. At Moneymore, Glenore, and Tokoiti areas earths have been repaired. Blocks have been fitted to poles in Moneymore, where also the 6.6kv. circuit has been resagged. Telephone links have been installed at Berwick. In North Milton sub, a heavier type of fuse has been fitted. Trees in various places have received attention where these are menacing the lines. The usual store and yard work, also transport maintenance, has been performed. In the testroom a set of telephone links have been made up. Rubber gloves and safety belts have received their routine testing, condensers were tested, time switches and meters have been tested and repaired. This work, as well as inspections, is increasing Lawrence Area. —Earths have been repaired at Forsyth and Beaumont, at which latter place and Evan’s Flat services have been repaired. At Beaumont 170 yards of low-tension have been run. and service reconstruction has been performed. Poles between Round Hill and Manuka have been armed in preparation for connecting the Waitahuna and Manuka 6000-volt circuits together and cutting out the Manuka 11.000-volt sub-station. At Wetherstones sub and transformer have been dismantled. At Mount Stuart and Beaumont, high-tension fuses have been removed. Stirling—A 120 k.v.a.r. bank of condensers has been installed in the mam sub, where the instrument wiring has been checked over. The new house at Stirling has occupied a considerable amount of time. In the North road a phone crossing has been reconstructed and eight poles blocked. At Kaitangata low-tension has been retied, and here and at Stirling Crescent and Paretai. services have received attention. Two seryices were shifted to permit of building operations. At Barnego voltage tests have been carried out. Eight new services have been run. In the pole yard broken bricks have been put down, and covered with gravel to form a lorry track. The main line was out on August 6 at 4.30 p.m. for 10 minutes, and at 7.50 p.m. until 3.10 a.m. the next day due to a tree falling across the line at Clarksville. Power was obtained from Kaitangata from 8.30 p.m. until 3.10 a.m. for the areas south of Lovell’s Flat, Milton and .north thereof being fed from Waipori. . On Sunday. August 12 power was obtained from Kaitangata from 1.55 p.m. to 4.45 p.m to allow of repairs being made to the main line. At 8.15 p.m. the same day power was interrupted on the main line due to wet straw accumulating on the lines. Power was obtained from Kaitangata at 8.52 p.m. until 12 15 a.m. when Waipori again carried the load. . , , Owaka.—All high-tension subs have been inspected, and a number of fuses repaired. At Romahapa low-tension and services have been re-strained where required. Inquiries for extensions in this area have occasioned a considerable amount of work. In all areas superintending of tree felling has occupied a considerable amount of time. The report was adopted.
