RANFURLY Central Otago Rifle Association The Central Otago Miniature Rifle Association held its first annual championship meeting last Saturday 911 the Ranfurly Club's range and received a good number of entries from all parts of the district and from Oamaru. Nine of the 14 clubs in Central were represented, some having teams in all the grades. The secretary (Mr R. G. Spence) had all arrangements well worked out, thus getting the shooting through with little delay. In the A Grade aggregate Mrs W. Webb (Cromwell Ladies) tied for first place with J. C. Kearney (Ranfurly), who was the youngest competitor, both scoring 155, which is only two points behind the winner of the recent New Zealand A Grade Aggregate. V. Sanders (Cromwell) also registered tins score to win the C Grade Aggregate. Mrs Webb also won the A Grade Individual with 78, and the Ladies’ Off-the-rifle Competition, and was second in the Ladies Handicap event. The only event not vet finalised is the Dunstan Times Cup, for which Kyeburn and Cromwell tied. These teams will shoot off on their home range next week. WAIMATE St. John Ambulance Association At the annual meeting of the Waimatc Sub-centre of the St. John Ambulance Association the election of officers resulted as follows;—President. Dr T. W. Basketball Basketball teams from the Timaru Girls’ High School and Craighead Girls’ School, Timaru, visited the Waimate High School for a triangular tournament. TEMUKA Pipe Bands’ Contest With a view to holding a pipe bands’ contest at Temuka on next Boxing Day, the combined committees of the Temuka Highland Pipe Band and Caledonian Society have decided to approach the New Zealand and Canterbury Pipe Bands’ Associations for information regarding the proposed competition. When the necessary information is forthcoming an organising committee will be appointed to further the project. Flag System An effort Is to be made by the Temuka branch of the Farmers’ Union to have the flag system introduced at the local stock sales. Temuka is the only stock sale in South Canterbury where this system is not in force. Platform and Policy of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union At a meeting of the Temuka branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union some time ago a remit was passed to be sent forward to the provincial executive, which read as follows; — “ That the platform and policy of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union be widened so as to embrace all sections of the farming community.” As matters political stand at present, there appears a growing demand among sections of the farming community that more interest should be taken by the farmers themselves to protect their own interests, particularly in view of the legislation recently introduced by Parliament. The remit will come up for discussion at the next provincial executive meeting at Timaru, when the opinions of leading South Canterbury farmers who are members of the executive will be awaited with interest. CROMWELL Rifle Club Twenty-four ladies again competed at the weekly shoot of the Kawarau Ladies’ Club. For a trophy presented by Mrs D. Nicol 10 memners scored 80 or over, including handicap, and the winner was Mrs R. H. Thomas. Miss M'Ewan won the gold button, and Mrs Berry the handicap button. Mining A Keystone drill which, has operated on freehold land on Cromwell Flat for some time was taken out of the district last week. Interest'in the re-pegging of mining privileges on Cromwell Flat vanished as quickly as it arose. The applications over the areas were withdrawn at the sitting of the court on Wednesday. . Golf The weekly match of the Cromwell Ladies’ Club resulted in a win for Mrs Grant, after a tie with Mrs Hosking, the scores being 105 respectively. The most important social function of the year was the Cromwell Golf Club ball, which attracted a large attendance, including visitors from all parts of Central Otago. In all respects it was a marked success.
