PREVENTION OF CRUELTY

MEETING OF OTAGO SOCIETY The monthly meeting of the executive of the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held yesterday, Mr A. D. Sutherland presiding. There were also present— Messrs R. Fountain, E. C, Reynolds, J. C. Willis, W. Cooper, A. F. Duthie, A. Lawrenson, S. P. Leith, J. Gordon, G. Mathieson and D. C. Cameron. AFFILIATION WITH FEDERATION Referring to a suggestion that the society should join the Federation of New Zealand Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the chairman explained that the committee had considered the idea and had decided that such a course would be inadvisable and unnecessary. The federation had apparently been established by some of the smaller societies, which were endeavouring to get some of the societies in the larger centres to support it. These latter, however, held the same views as the Otago Society, and were not in favour of affiliation. —The chairman’s report was noted. AID FOR SMALL SOCIETIES A letter was received from the Federation of New Zealand Societies suggesting that the Otago Society consider the advisability of assisting one of the smaller societies —for example, the North Otago Society, which urgently required funds to carry on its work. The chairman said that this was something new, as so far die society had received no request from North Otago for assistance. Apparently the North Otago Society was affiliated to the federation, and it seemed, therefore, that the federation should give the required assistance. Mr Willis agreed with the chairman s point of view. “ I think,” he remarked, “ that the federation has a fair nerve to make such a request.” It was decided to replv to the federation stating that the North Otago Society had never applied for funds, and suggesting that the federation itself should give any necessary assistance. ANIMAL WELFARE WEEK Letters were received from the North Otago, Auckland and Wanganui Societies signifying their willingness to cooperate in holding Animal Welfare Week from October 4 to October 10. in accordance with a suggestion put forward by the New Zealand Federation. The chairman stated that unfortunately the Otago Society had already made arrangements to hold its week from September 27 to October 4, and it was now too late to alter these dates. It was agreed that Mr Willis deliver a broadcast address during the week on animal welfare. INSPECTOR’S REPORT In his monthly report the inspector (Mr J. J. Hinchclifr) stated that he had investigated an allegation that two dogs in the city were being starved, and had found that the animals were well fed. A horse which was said to be starving had been inspected, and had been found to be in good condition. The owner had stated that, as the animal was out of work, it was not being fed as regularly as it should be. but he gave an assurance that it would receive better attention. The report was adopted.
