Diamond made a bad jump at the top sod wall, and fell badly at the straight brush. Punchestown was left in charge passing the stands, followed by High Speed, Forest Glow, Manawatu, Royal Limond, Billy Boy, and Pahu. Punchestown lost his rider at the sod wall entering the

back, for Royal Limond to take charge after jumping the kennels double the last time. He was followed across the top by High Speed. Manawatu. Forest Glow, and Billy Boy. NOTES ON THE RACING (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, August 11. The Grand National meeting was opened in beautifully fine weather, and attracted what appeared to be a record attendance. The track provided firm going. The results gave some severe jolts to investors, as some heavilybacked horses failed to finish where their supporters predicted. The racing was very interesting. An outsider in Havering led off by paying over a score to win, and Emissary followed by returning over double figures. A well-backed chance in Silk Sox won the Jumpers’ Flat, and popular picks in Sir Hugh and Autumn Wind finished first and second in the Cashmere Plate. Backers struck disaster again when Diamond, probably the hottest favourite that ever started in the Grand National, went out after completing the first circuit after making mistakes on the way. Billy Boy retrieved some of the money lost on a strong fancy, and another favourite in Thurina was beaten a long way from home in the Enfield Steeples, in which Money Mine, a rank outsider, paid over double figures. The result of the Winter Cup was another blow to punters, and the card finished by the winner paying close on half a century. , Despite a run of big dividends, the totalisator returns showed an increase over last year's figures of £12,276. A good deal of money was shut out during the day, as the totalisator stuff could not cope with the business in the time given to handle the betting. The totalisator was shut down well up to time, and the last race was less than a-quarter of an hour late. Lord Hereford dropped out of the Trial Hurdles, for which The Smuggler was backed to a short price to win, although Saltspray and Santoft were slightly shorter for a place. The Smuggler and Havering led over the first hurdle, and had Redolent next at the stand hurdle. The Smuggler was jumping badly. Once in the back The Smuggler was in charge, but he struck heavily at the mile post. John Charles was up with The Smuggler going along the back, with Saltspray and the others close up, except Haere Tonu, who was several lengths away, i The Smuggler was still in charge at the second last hurdle from Saltspray and Havering, and then Haere Tonu commenced to move up. Havering headed The Smuggler and Saltspray coming to the last hurdle, where Haere Tonu ran off and dropped his rider. Havering came on to win by three lengths from Saltspray, who beat Santoft by a neck. Redolent was close up fourth and The Smuggler about four lengths further Copyist was the only withdrawal from the Paparua Handicap, and Bay Duke was the popular fancy. The barrier rose to a good line, and Emissary was first to show from a field that spread quickly. Emissary came on from Knockfin, Bay Duke. Pukeko, Ada, Arrow Rose and Dollar Bill. Emissary was clear entering the straight from Knpckfin and Pukeko, and came on to win by a length from Pukeko, who had Gaysome and Bay Duke close up, with Arena and Dollar Bill next. _ Streamline headed off Clarion Call and Courtyard after they led out in the Jumpers’ Flat. Streamline led along the back'from Silk Sox, Travelling Agent and Polydora. The order was the same coming round the top, where Jolly Beggar began to move up. Silk Sox joined Streamline at the home turn, where Travelling Agent, Clarion Call, Polydora, Journet and Jolly Beggar were following the leaders. Silk Sox wore down Streamline and beat him by a length. Journet was three lengths away, with Clarion Call, Travelling Agent and Jolly Beggar next. Polydora dropped out m the run home. 1Q . Autumn Wind, who drew No._ 18 at the barrier, was smartest out in the Cashmere Plate, and led Recollection, Culotte, Cape Gabo, Coxcomb and Sunbeam as they turned for home. Autumn Wind was still clear after passing the distance, and then Sir nugn arrived on the scene. Sir Hugh wore down the leader and won by a length. Cape Gabo was two lengths away third and Rousseau next. Diamond started a hot favourite to win the Grand National Steeplechase, but Billy Boy was more m demand for a place. Diamond and High Speed led over the first fence and the stand double, with Forest Glow next. Diamond did not jump too well at Cults s, but kept on and led over the wall. He got into trouble at the post and rails, and going to the kennels double High Speed, Punchestown, Billy Boy, and the rest of the field had closed up. ■Diamond was nearly down at the sod wall and dropped back last. The fence at the top of the straight proved fatal to the favourite, who crumpled up on landing, with a broken barck. Punchestown, High Speed, and Forest Glow were showing the way over the stand double for the second time, with the others in fairly close attendance. They all went well over Cutts’s fence, but Punchestown bumped his rider off at the sod wall. High Speed, Manawatu, Forest Glow, and Royal Limond led the way to the kennels double. Royal Limond then took charge, and c#w away. Safely clearing the sod wall, the brush fence, and the final fence, he came on to win by a good eight lengths from Billy Boy, who drew up and beat High Speed by a length. Manawatu .was two lengths away fourth, a head in front of Pahu. Forest Glow struck the last fence and cantered home last. . Thurina went out favourite for the Enfield Steeples, but lack of condition and weight had him beaten a long way from home. Nocturnus went out at Cutts’s fence when - one of the leaders, and Otaura King crashed heavily at the first of the kennels double. Royston was then clear and looking a winner, but he made a bad jump at the last fence, where he stopped on landing. Money Mine, who was under punishment at the home turn, cut the corner and saved a lot of ground. Money Mine came on to win from Burglar, who beat Royston by four lengths. Kaokaoroa was another length away. Cranford and Golden Dart dropped out of the Winter Cup and Ponly started favourite both ways in a good belting race. The barrier rose to a good line, from which Concertpitch and Wino began best, followed by Adalene, Fair Weather, Metal Bird, Royal Gallant, Queen of Song, and Ponty, who soon dropped back last. Going to the far turn, Concertpitch and Wino were racing together in front of Adalene. Metal Bird, Royal Gallant, Fair Weather, Queen of Song, and The Surgeon, with Ponty last. Concertpitch and Wino continued in charge coming round the top and to the home turn, where Adalene, Metal Bird, and Boomerang were heading a pack, and Ponty was still last. Wino had Concertpitch beaten at the false rail, where Adalene suffered interference by getting shut out on the rails. Wino drew out from Concertpitch and won by a length. Ponty came with a great run on the outside

and flying jiast the field, got within half a length of Concertpitch. AdaIcne was close up fourth, followed by Boomerang, Mount Val, Metal Bird. Davolo, Epris, and Wall Street. Davolo, Silk Arrow, Wall Street, and The Surgeon were slow away at the rise of the barrier.

Grey Honour, Arabond, Owl’s Gleam, Call Money, Fiord, Rose of Tralee, and Matoru were the early leaders in the Avonhead Handicap, and they formed the leading dwision coming round the top. Grey Honour and Call Money led into the straight from Owl's Gleam, Fiord, and Araboa. Fiord joined Grey Honour as they came to the false rail and Matoru put in a claim. Fiord stayed on to beat Matoru by a short half-length. Sovereign Lady, who was about sixth into the straight, finished on in third place, two lengths away, and then came Grey Honour, Araboa, Rose of Tralee, Poinard, and Hunting Maid. Cintalla got badly away and Queen Dorothy was placed in the pen after declining to get in lino. The Smuggler was elected a strong fancy for the Trial Hurdles, but ho settled his chance by getting into nearly every hurdle, and was a beaten horse when supplanted in the lead by Havering when going into the last hurdle. The Smuggler twice interfered with Redolent when dwelling at a jump.

Havering won the Trial Hurdles so well at the finish that it is a matter of regret that he is not engaged in the Grand National Hurdles.

Emissary really made a one-horse race of the Paparua Handicap. Pukeko threatened danger 100 yards from home, but Emissary stuck on do win. Knockfin was always prominent, and should be improved by the race. Travenna appeared to get cut out, and was at the tail of the field all the way. The winner is not too sound in the x-espiratory organs, and although particularly speedy does not stay. When Travenna’s rider dismounted after the Paparua Handicap he appeared to be blinded in one eye, and apparently he was struck with a clod of turf. They went strongly for Bay Duke in the Paparua Handicap, but after being with the leaders until well into the straight he faded into fifth place at the finish.

Autumn Wind showed a good dash of speed in the Cashmere Plate, but Sir Hugh outstayed him at the finish. Diamond probably commenced his troubles in the Grand National Steeples by pulling hard when in front of the field and might have done a lot better if allowed to stride along. He hit the post and rails, which is only three feet six inches and the smallest jump on the course. He was nearly out at the sod wall, which follows the kennels double and dropped back last. The final fence saw him collapse on landing and a bullet ended the career of the most promising steeplechaser of the season. Billy Boy jumped well except at the sod wall over a mile from home and lost ground. He finished on well to get second honours. Punchestown appeared to be going well when in charge with High Speed, but bumped his rider off. Royal Limond was handy to the leaders in the Grand National Steeples at the stand double the second time. He jumped to the front at the kennels double and from that on had the race well won. There is no doubt that Royal Limond goes much better for R. Beale than he did when ridden by D. O’Connor. R. Beale rode with excellent judgment and gave a fine exhibition of horsemanship. The Winter Cup can be fully summed up by the statement that Ponty was an absolute certainty beaten. He began fairly well but had not travelled far when even Davolo, The Surgeon, and Silk Arrow, who were last away, had passed him. Ponty was last all the way to the home turn and then became converted into a flying machine in the run home. He gave 15 horses a start and beat them all bar two. Another stride and he would have been second, and better placed even half a mile from home would have been a sure winner. Wino scored a meritorious win In the Winter Cup as he set the pace with Concertpitch and outstayed him home. Mr J. M. Samson has sold his Iliad— Anne Shakespeare two-year-old colt at 1000 guineas to a Sydney buyer. The colt has been much admired and some little while back an offer of 800 guineas was refused for him. HANDICAPS FOR SECOND DAY

RACING NEWS By Sentinel Limond Lad Doing Well An Adelaide report states that Limond Lad, the highest-priced yearling at the Trentham sales 18 months ago, is now working along nicely again. If he performs satisfactorily in the Adelaide or Port Adelaide Guineas Mr E. E. Jolly will send him to Melbourne for the V.R.C. Derby. , Newcomer to Stable A newcomer to R. S. Bagby's stable at Ellerslie is a three-year-old gelding by Silvius from La Chantuese, by

Crowdennis from Vocal Princess, by Comedy King. This Australian-bred gelding is owned by Mr A. H. Long, and comes from the same family on the maternal side as Sir Abb, who won several races in the colours of that sportsman.

Gentleman Rider Mr E. H. Martelli, a resident of Timaru. is the only gentleman xdder credited with a win in the Grand National (says the Timaru Herald). He was on Royalty, who won the 1876 race —the first National at Christchurch. H. Limn was on Canard when that horse succeeded, and later had the prefix “ Mr ” given him in some races, but it seems to be generally accepted that he was a professional, though the borderline in those days was shadowy. Mr Martelli met with a fatal accident in the hunting field at Arowhenua some ■'■ears after his National victory.

Grand National Steeplechase The New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase, which was instituted in 1875, holds a special place on the racing calendar in the Dominion by reason of its being the oldest cross-country event now standing. This year's contest was the sixty-second. The two races that can be cited as furnishing the sensational surpi’ise touch were those of 1905 and 1915, when Inniskillen and Ngatoa respectively scored. In regard to Inniskillen, who was a most eiTatic fencer, it was a popular opinion that he would not complete the course. However, though he jumped in a very slovenly manner throughout, he managed to stand up to bring off a notable surprise. The year in which Ngatoa scored his surprise victory witnessed the complete rout of the favourite division. Ngatoa won by 50 yards from The Brewer, and the latter was separated by 100 yards fx - om Golden Glow. The contest was voted the poorest, witnessed at Riccarton. The following is a list of winner’s who carried imposts of 12.0 and over:—The Agent (three wins), 12.0, 12.7, 12.6; Clarence 12.2, Canard 12.10, Chemist 12.7, Norton 12.8, Levanter 12.6, Coalition 12.7, Oakleigh 12.0.

The Winter Cup The Winter Cup was first run in 1899, the title of the event prior to that being Winter Handicap. It has always been a difficult race to win, and has been productive of many surprises; among the winners who can be remembered in association with big dividends being Magdala, Parky, King Star, Solferite, Mount Boa, and Princess Doreen. No horse has succeeded in winning a second Winter Cup, and no owner has won it more than once. Until four years ago the minimum weight was 9.0, and under that condition the time record (Imin 40sec) was made by the little-fancied Aucklander Le Choucas, who pulled the backers of his bracket mate (the hot favourite Nippy) out of trouble. Since the 8.0 minimum has been in vogue, Princess Doreen has reduced the time to Imin 39 4-ssec. Toxeuma won the race seven years ago under 11.5, and so long as the 8.0 minimum remains in force this is unlikely to be exceeded. Other big weights carried to victory under the old regulations were 10.12 by Vladimir and Kremlin, and 10.11 by Gazique. A Surprising Decision If you owned the best stayer in the world, would you have her trained to win a Grand National Steeples at Aintree? Quashed, the English mare, who as a three-year-old won the Oaks and many other rich races and in June defeated the America Omaha for the Ascot Gold Cup, is to be kept in training and schooled over fences. In a few years’ time an attempt will be made to win the Grand National with her. It is almost unbelievable, but “Hotspur,” one of the most authoritative of English sporting writers, declares that when Quashed’s lease to Lord Stanley expires at the end of the year, she will return to her breeder, Lady Barbara Smith, who will adopt the plan outlined. “ Hotspur ” adds: “ Those people who think that horses are kept to be admired! in paddocks will rise and say, ‘ How dreadful to send such a good mare steeplechasing.’ In an era when horses are hurried off the turf at the earliest moment to be commercialised at the stud this Is the most refreshing thing we have heard for a long time. After all, Lady Barbara’s father, the late Lord Coventry, won two Grand Nationals in successive seasons with two mares, Emblem and Emblematic, and why should she not try and carry on a great family tradition when she has the material, for Quashed is the real cut of a high-class steeplechaser? ” If Quashed can jump at all well, then it will be a poor lookout for the steeplechasers in England. It is difficult to make a comparison between Quashed and a New Zealand horse, but it would take a very substantial weight to stop her in races like the Auckland Cup or the New Zealand Cup. TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel Successful Sires Last season, Rey de Oro £27,297 and Wrack £12,403 were the most successful sires in New Zealand, and they commenced the new term well on Saturday. De Soto and Golden Mist winning for Rey de Oro and Sea Gift for Wrack. Costly Defeats The first four-year-old appearances of last season’s star three-year-tplds was expensive to backers. At Addington on Saturday Gamble 1367, Frisco Lady 1257, and Blair Athol 1157 were all win favourites, and all were beaten. Pot Luck did not start, M. Holmes taking the drive behind Village Guy. Coats for Stable Hands At Addington on Saturday Mr G. J. Barton’s stable hands wore threequarter length coats representing his racing colours —black, with heliotrope collars. The men looked neat and smart in their new livery, and the coats prevented their clothes from being spoiled while handling the horses in the birdcage. Lost Through Breaking Discord appeared to throw away certain victory in the Stewards’ Handicap at Addington by a break in the soft track, after going half a furlong. Commencing the last round the Wrack mare was just behind the backmarker. Sea Gift. When the pace was cracked on half a mile from home Discord trotted strMe for stride with Sea Gift, and was only a couple of lengths behind the crack mare at the winning post. Penalty of Two Seconds De Soto is the first horse to receive a penalty of two seconds in the 4mm 28sec or faster class since system handicapping was introduced. Under the new clauses, a penalty of one second is compulsory, and the handicapper has the option of imposing a further second where the gross value of the race is £SOO or over. De Soto's last three wins have brought him back from 4min 32sec to 4min 26sec. Last season De Soto won £1572, being third to Graham Direct £2058 and Indianapolis £I7BO, and he has taken the lead for the new term. Auckland Owners’ Successes Two Auckland trotting owners, Messrs W. Hosking and S. G. Hedley, were successful at Addington on Saturday, the former being represented by Rustle and the latter by Bonny Azure. Rustle and Bonny Azure were both good winners for F. J. Smith. Rustle, who had not raced for some time, was recently sent to J. S. Shaw's stable, as there were no classes to suit him in Auckland. Bonny Azure, after the Auckland winter meeting, went into L. O. Thomas's stable for similar reasons. May Surprise When raced at the Auckland winter meeting Native Princess displayed signs of early improvement by finishing a close fourth to Bingen Sun in the Winter Handicap, the slow-class trotting event on the opening day. She was in one of the leading positions practically all the way, and it was only in the last furlong that she faded a little. It was Native Princess’s first race for some time, and she should improve on that elforv. She is down to compete in both the Duke Street and Te Koutu Park'Handicaps at Cambridge this week, and although she may not figure among the well-backed division, she is a likely sort to effect a surprise.
