OBITUARY
MR NICOL M'NICOLL (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 10. The death is announced of Mr Nicol M'Nicoll, formerly* an official in the provisioning department of the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd. He retired from the company's service in 1920. MR JOHN MACDONALD The death occurred in Dunedin last Thursday of Mr John Macdonald who, in 1931, retired from the service of the Lands Department, his last appointment having been as commissioner of Crown lands for Southland. Born at Beaumont he moved with his parents to Palmerston, where he received his education at the local District High School. Having passed the junior Civil Service examination with credit he was appointed cadet in the Lands Office at Invercargill. His subsequent career was one of unqualified success and steady advancement. Excepting a short term in the head office in Wellington, his 40 years' of service were spent in Invercargill and Dunedin. His knowledge of land laws and their administration was thorough. Land Board members and clients of the Lands Office appreciated his clear grasp of any situation that arose and his personal courtesy in all dealings. In legal matters outside his own department, as likewise in the political movements and social problems of the day, Mr Macdonald showed keen insight. Always a student, his reading included a great deal of the best in English literature. Since his retirement some five years ago his health had become precarious. His widow (nee Miss Lily Campbell) was the second daughter of Mr and Mrs Duncan Campbell, Spey street, well known residents of early Invercargill. There is one son, Mr Duncan Macdonald, of Oamaru, and one daughter, Miss Sheila Macdonald, of Dunedin.
