THE INCOME TAX
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —Thanks are due to your correspondent "Wondering," whose letter was published in Saturday's issue, for the clear manner in which he has set out the proportion of the increases in income tax. The Budget is perhaps the first act of the Government in which the result can be clearly seen, and as an effort to ensure a " more even distribution of purchasing power " is cause for wonder. There will be an increase of 62.1 per cent, in the tax on incomes of £SOO, and an increase of 4.3 per cent, in incomes of £2OOO. "We will take it from those who have it," the frequently expressed intention of Government spokesmen, would be more accurate with the addition of "least." It is to be hoped that the ultimate effect of other recent legislation will not be similar to this, —I am, etc., Anxious. Dunedin, August 10.
