BOYS EMPLOYED TOO EARLY A contravention of (he Shops nml 1 Offices Act—the employing of boys to de- i liver milk before 7 n.m.—was alleged in I the Mastcrton Magistrate’s Court a few days ago, when James Tulloeh, William Day and William Gilliland, milk vendors, were each fined ss. On behalf of the department it was stated that the action arose out of complaints that defendants were employing boys under 1(1 to deliver milk before 7 a.m. i On behalf of one of the defendants it
wns pointed out that two of tin* boys env ployed were pniiils of the High School and the Technical School respectively, and that they miuired a little money to attend, They worked one hour and arpiartcv a day and wore paid lbs a week. The circumstances did not warrant the paying of a man’s wages. These were the first prosecutions of milk vendors under the Act in the district. In another case it was stated that the boy concerned was lIA years of age. The parents were in poor circumstances and by getting the work the boy was able to obtain school books which otherwise he would not be able to obtain.
