FIXING OF PRICES
AN UNCONTROLLABLE FACTOR The issues that hang on the fixing of the margin between butter and cheese oiler a telling example (the New Zealand Herald says) of the power to regu late productiongiven to the Government by its price-fixing machine. 80 far only the margin lias been fixed, but it will all'eet the output of all the different classes of dairy produce. No doubt factory accountants are carefully figuring nut the balance of advantage as between butter and cheese, plus their various byproducts. When, not a margin, but prices arc announced two months hence, it will be tbe farmers’ turn. They will be asking themselves whether it will pay them better to accept the guarantee or whether the prospects are better for beef, for fat lambs and wool, and so on. Let the balance be ever so little in favour of one commodity and the whole present basis of farming in New Zealand may bo changed, and marketing problems at the same time.
