UNEMPLOYED WORKERS’ MOVEMENT

GENERAL MEETING. The general meeting of the Dunedin Central branch of the N ational Unemployed Workers’ Movement was. held in the Trades Hall on Tuesday evening. Mr R Wilkinson (vice-president) presided over a very large attendance of members and their wives. A large amount of important correspondence was read and dealt with. Mr Doig, of the Otago University, delivered a short add- on the unemployment situation in Zealand, and intimated that a prize of. £5 6s was now being offered to the relief worker who sent in the neatest and most accurate household budget for the next three mC The S monthly statement was adopted, showing the branch to be in a very satisfactory position both in finance and membership. A number of complaints were tabled and left in the secretary s hands to deal with. A strong resolution of protest was carried against the retaining ol Mr W Bromley in the Labour Department and demanding his removal immediately! the secretary being instructed to forward this resolution to the of Labour. Messrs Geddes and Maitland were appointed to attend an anti-war meeting in the Harrop Street Hall on June 30. A report was received from the delegates who attended the unemployed returned soldiers’ meeting, and it was agreed to protest to the Returned Soldiers’ Association against the discrimination between fit and unfit men. A protest was also carried, to be sent, to the Minister of Public Works, drawing his attention to the manner of men being dismissed from various jobs without Ins consent or knowing anything about it. Two eases of invent distress had been granted assistance since the last meeting, The secretary was instructed to send a further protest to the Minister of Labour against tile U.B. and sustenance forms still being the same.
