PRESENT FROM DEAD SON
Sitting up in bed in St. John's Hospital. Wandsworth, on her one-hundredth ‘-hirthdav. Mrs Hannah Talk received * dartre cake that she thought came from her sou Arthur. She was surrounded bT friends and relatives. Only one thing clouded her happiness—Arthur was not there. . ~ . . “When is Arthur coming?’ to her repeated inquiry. She was told that h® had pent the eake in case he could not see her himself. They could not tell her the tragic truth—that Arthur was killed in an accident at his home three years ago. Doctors say that the shock of the news would kill her. . “Grannie and her son were passionate y devoted to each other.” 'Mrs Lydia v alk, of Battersea, a grand-daughter, said. He was a frequent visitor to the hospital until his death. We had to keep making excuses for his absence. Ho promised grannie a special present on her onehundredth birthday,. So we gave her « large cake, saying that Arthur had sent it. She must never know that he i r dead.”
