HUGHES-STIRLING FIGHT
BOXING ATTRACTION Archie Hughes, the former New South Wales and New Zealand champion boxer, will arrive in Dunedin this afternoon for his professional 15-round contest tomorrow night with Don Stirling, the New Zealand professional welter-weight champion. Hughes will he no stranger to Dunedin, for he fought here as ft comparative youngster, and had the distinction of going 15 rounds with Johnny L’eekic, a feat that gained him much praise at the time. He also made several other appearances in the Dominion before returning to Sydney. He was then the New South Wales featherweight champion, and when he next visited New Zealand he ran up a fine record among the light-weights, eventually winning the Dominion light-weight title. He has had something like 280 contests, has won more than 200, and has never l)oen knocked out. He is still in his twenties, hut is such an experienced fighter that he should prove one of the host -csts for Stirling the New Zealand champion has had to date. Stirling, however, is a vastly improved fighter, and he is punching so hard that Hughes will require to he at his very best to maintain his record of having no knock-out registered against him. This is the first bout in the very attractive programme that has been arranged by the Otago Boxing Association, and the Town Hall should ho filled for what promises to be a willing and exciting contest.
The preliminaries arc of a most attractive nature, and the bout between Jack Arnott (Milton) and S.' Jcnkin (Oamaru) should be worth going a long way to see, as both are clover boxerfighters. X. Jenkin will meet X. Grcancy, and the clever little Kaitangata fly-weight, M. Parr, will also fight in a bout. Full particulars are advertised.
