POST OFFICE STAFF

ADDITIONAL MAN-POWER NEEDED NO LACK OF APPLICANTS Announcing increased staffing in the Post and Telegraph Department yesterday, the Postmaster-general (Mr F. Jones) remarked that there was no dearth of applicants for positions. Moreover, the average qualifications of applicants were very high. Indications were not lacking in the Post and Telegraph Department of a decided recovery in conditions generally, said Mr Jones. There had been much activity in connection with the staffing requirements over the past six months, and a noticeable feature had been the strong demand for additional manpower to meet increased work. Inspecting officers had been busy investigating the conditions on the spot, and invariably their repots had referred to the pronounced uplift in business and to the need for strengthening the staff. The movement had not been confined to any particular branch or section, its effect being felt in almost every sphere of the departments many activities, “ Since December 1 last the improved conditions enabled 587 promotions to be made and have also allowed the department to give employment to about 450 outside applicants,” said the Minister. “The latest returns still have an upward tendency, and it can be advanced that the buoyancy in business has not yet reached its maximum and that further staff increases may bo anticipated.”
