BOXING ATTRACTION

HUGHES v. STIRLING Interest is mounting in the boxing attraction that has been arranged at the Town Hall on Saturday night between the seasoned Australian fhmter, Archie Hughes, and Don Stirling, the New Zealand welter-weight champion. The bout is listed for 15 three-minute rounds, and there should be no lack of action, since both men are known np solid punchers and willing fighters. Stirling is, of course, well known to Dunedin boxing enthusiasts as a colourful boxer_ with considerable punching ability, and in his recent match with Cyril Pluto he showed all his earlier promise, giving one of the finest displays of his career. He will be thoroughly tested by Hughes, who, though still n young man, is one of the most experienced men in the game in either Australia or Now Zealand. even then he held the New South Wales feather-weight championship, and he made a great showing in staying 15 rounds with Johnny Leekic, who was then at the top of his form. On his second visit to New Zealand he won the New Zealand light-weight championship, and heat many, of the best men in the Dominion. When he returned to Australia he engaged in further contests, and not so long ago put up a fine struggle with the New South Wales welter-weight champion. Hughes is a ruggged ami solid fighter, possessing a great knowledge of ringcraft, and he lias a record which does not include a single knock-out against him in something like 280 fights. Fight followers arc asking whether Stirling can alter that record. Hughes is emphatic that he cannot, and he is so certain of his ability to make Stirling move all the way that he is out for a title fight with the Oamaru boxer immediately after the present bout.

The main bout will be preceded by the usual amateur preliminaries, among them being a contest between Jack Arnott (Milton) and S. Jenkin (Oamaru), which should he worth going a long way to see, Jenkin created a great impression hero at the Otago championships last year, and Arnott is known as one of the cleverest boxer-lighters in. the province. N. Jenkin and N. Greaney will meet in a feather-weight bout, n nd there will he two other amateur bouts, in one of which the clever Kaitangata fly-weight. M. Parr, will meet P. W. Buckley.
