MANAWATU RIVER

RAPID RISE DURING NIGHT LOW-LYING LAND THREATENED (Per United Press Association) PALMERSTON N., June 17. Following heavy rain in Hawke's Ray, the Manawatu River rose rapidly overnight from its comparatively low winter level of 2 feet to 14 feet 9 inches hy 11 o’clock to-day, and threatened to inundate all the low-lying land in the vicinity of Tiakitahuna and Rangiotu. an area which has suffered extensively by past floods. The settlers this morning began to remove their stock. There is still a gap three chains wide in the protective banking at Hamilton’s Rend, a danger spot in the river. With the river continuing to rise it may go across country and make the main Palmerston North-Foxlon highway impassable.

Two small slips and one large slip which came down north of Mangaweka early this morning caused a delay of over three hours to the south-bound limited. The train was held at Taihape from 4 till 7 a.in. till the line was clear. The south-bound airliner was delayed at Mi Isom to enable passengers by the limited to join it.
