BUSINESS RECOVERY
INCREASED SPENDING POWER RESTORATION OF CONFIDENCE (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 11. In a statement to-day the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr D. G. Sullivan) says his officers, who are in very close touch with all sections of commercial activity, are in line with the information reaching him from other sources to the effect that an improvement is being effected on all sides. A striking feature is that the better quality article is in demand, indicating that spending power has improved. There is building activity in most markets, but the improvement is not confined thereto, numerous other lines showing much better results; and there is every prospect of continuance. This, the Minister says, is most encouraging, and is an effective reply to those who, to suit their own purposes, insist that there is lack of confidence in business, and that the Government's policy spells ruin and disaster. He is satisfied that there is more real confidence and optimism than at any time since those years that are referred to as the " depression," and he is equally certain that this spirit will be even moremarked when the full effect of the Labour policy is felt right throughout the Dominion.
