MOSGIEL BOROUGH COUNCIL

SPECIAL MEETING A special meeting of the Mosaic! Borough Council was held last evening, the Mavor (Mr A. F. Quelch) presiding. Crs W. 1\ Hartstonge, G. Smith, R. Snieaton. J. F. Frew, A. Steven and E. J. Wilson were present. The meeting was for the purpose of levying the rates for the current year, and notice to strike the following rates was given :—General rate, 2gd; hospital and charitable aid rate, 2id; lighting rate, Id: £IO.OOO renewal loan, annual charge, 3]d; £9OOO conversion loan, annual charge, 2d; making a total of 113<l; water rate, 2Jd; W.C. charge, £1: sanitation charge, 12s Od; garbage. 3s. The chairman of the Finance Committee (Cr Hartstonge), in moving the motion, stated that for the four years 1030 1033 the average annual rates had been £5025, while for the first four years of office of the present council (to March 31. 1937) the annual average rates for the borough would be £442l—a reduction of £OOO per annum. The total reduction for the four years would therefore be

£2400. He said that the rates for the present financial year would be the same as last year (£4292). During the ifltit vcars the council would spend out or revenue the sum of £IO7O on works of a. capital nature, and would in addition liave placed to reserves the 6um of £SOO. The principal items of capital expenditure were: —Tar sealing roads £942, purchase of land £522, new water meters £lB2. In addition the council had spent approximately £SOO on outstanding maintenance other than its normal maintenance. The principal items of expenditure durincr the present year would include: — Completion of tar sealine of Gladstone and Factory roads £4OO. and contribution towards erection of public swimming baths £SOO. The Otago Hospital Board's levy had been Increased by £172, while the council had to provide for increases in salaries and waees to its emploveeg und also provide for increases whioV would probably have to bo met on pui* clipse of materials, etc. These mattctf had all beeji provided for without an? increase in the rates.
