Reports of meetings of branches are requested, but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be assured.

At the June meeting of the Balclutha W.D.F.U. Mrs Holgate presided. Remits for the forthcoming conference were read and discussed. Mrs George Guest ( gave a demonstration on “ Beaton brass,” and showed various finished articles. Meadames Barclay, Knarston, Throp, and R. Christie were hostesses.

The president (Mrs Lee) presided at the June meeting of the Wnikouaiti branch in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Friday night. Remits for the provincial conference were read and discussed. A demonstration by a representative of the Singer Sewing Machine Company was then given. Supper with the Men's Division brought an enjoyable evening to a close. Hostesses were Mesdames Leo, Harvey, Wilson and J. Payne.

A meeting of the Taieri Mouth branch was held on Wednesday. Mrs Sinclair presided. The roll call was “ What of visitors I would like to have if I were ill.” The competition, “ Mode-over garments.” was won by Mies Marshall (child’s coat), with Miss E. Barber second place (slippers). Five pounds was voted to the community chest and £2 to the general fund. Mrs Barber was appointed delegate to attend the needlework demonstration to be held during the conference. Miss D. Marshall told how she filled and quilted an eiderdown. Hostesses were Mrs D. Milne and Misses Marshall and Barber,

Mrs Mulvey presided over the meeting of the Balclutha Institute, held in St. Mark’s Hall on Tuesday afternoon. The motto was “Fidelity in small things is the basis of all great achievements. The secretary of the Clutha branch of t.ie R.S.A. wrote thanking members for their assistance on the occasion of the Poppy Day appeal. Mrs Tweedie reported on the business transacted at the recent South Otago conference and was accorded a vote of thanks. During the social halfhour Mrs J. G. Anderson sang two solos. Mr W. L. Jolly gave a talk on “Art. The points competition, “ One-eee cake, resulted: Fruit cake —Mrs J. Smith 1, Mrs Berrvman 2. Mesdames Smith and Sutherland (eonal) 3: sponge—Mrs J. Gold 1, Mrs M'Diarmid and Mrs Montgomerie (equal) 2. Miss Dawson 3.

At the meeting of Sutton Women’s Institute. on Saturday, the president (Mrs

Kinsman) made feeling reference to the passing of the oldest member, the late Mrs M'Rae, and members stood in silence aa a mark of respect to her memory. The motto was “The aim, whether reached or not. makes great the life.” The roll call was “A riddle.” Competitions (indeed by vote) resulted as follows; — Puff pastry: Miss M. Cockerell 1, Mrs Terry 2, Mrs Johnstone and Mrs J. H. Jones 3 (equal). Knitted tea cosy: Miss D. Kinsman 1, Mrs J. A. Jones and Mi’s Terry 2 (equal), Miss M. Cockerell and Mrs Kinsman 4 (equal). A consignment of bosketware from the Blind Institute. Auckland, which had been ordered, was distributed to members. The social inter hide arranged by Miss Bell was a “ Motor parts ” competition, this being 'won by Miss J. MTlardy. It was decided to send Mrs Kinsman as delegate to the Dominion Conference in > Dunedin in July. Hostesses were Mrs Kidd and Misses Bell and Cockerell. Birthday greetings were extended to Mrs Cockerell, Mrs Harvie and Mrs Terry.
