MANCHESTER UNITY
The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Valley Lodge was presided over by X'.G. Bro. C. Bachop. Arrangements wore made to hold a return debate with the Loyal Mosgiel Lodge at the next meeting. The subject chosen was “ Should Capital Punishment Be Abolished?” and a team was selected to represent the Valley. One new member was initiated. A short discussion was held on the new ritual, and later a degree meeting was held, the thanks of the meeting being extended to P.G. Bro. J. Swan, who delivered the lectures. The monthly meeting of Loyal Tapanui Lodge attracted a good attendance of officers and brethren, the X.G. presiding, 'three nominations for membership were received, while applications for two outward clearances were made. As the next meeting of the lodge will be the halfyearly one. nominations were taken for office for the ensuing six months. At the close of general business the secretary spoke on (ho universal ritual, a copy of which was before the meeting. At the Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge
meeting X.G. Bro. R. H. CuraberbcacK presided over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened in mourning, the deaths having occurred of three of the lodge’s older members, Bros. Craik, Rappe and Lucas. Resolutions of sympathy were passed with the relatives of the late brethren. Prior to the lodge receiving an official visit from sister lodges three new members were initiated. The''X.G. extended a welcome to a largo number of visiting brethren representing all (ho city and suburban lodges. An excellent programme bad been arranged by the Social Committee, the following contributing enjoyable items: —Misses <l. Meinung and -I. Vickery (dances), Mrs T. M. Brydone (songs'), Messrs R. Duerdon (songs), and A. X’. Watson (monologues). Mrs W. H. Masters acted ns accompanist. The visitors were afterwards entertained to supper, and the evening concluded with dancing.
