EMPLOYEES’ SOCIETY

AUCKLAND CITY MARKET

REGISTRATION REFUSED

(Per United Press Association)

AUCKLAND, June 0,

The registration of the Auckland City Market Employees’ Society under the Arbitration Act has been refused by the registrar of industrial unions. Wellington, for the reason that he sees no reason why the workers concerned should not belong to appropriate existing organisations. The opinion that the Minister of Labour, who, under the Act, would presumably have exercised his veto, had not understood the position, but had listened to a vocal minority, was expressed by an official of the guild. “Naturally, we are disappointed,” said the official, “ particularly as our application and other applications from guilds appear to have created hostility and stirred up a certain amount of class feeling from craft unions 1 am honest in my opinion that there was no feeling of class distinction behind the movement. Some, of the guilds which have been in existence long before the advent of the new industrial legislation of the Labour Government may have been helped or inspired by the employers, but guilds recently formed or in the process of formation are, so far as I can discover, inspired by workers who believe their particular interests would be best served bv having an organisation representative of their particular industry and embracing all types of labour therein.”
