AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION

MONTHLY MEETING Tlie monthly meeting of the Automobile Association (Otago) was held last night. The president (Mr F. J. Williams) occupied tho chair. CORRESPONDENCE. The South Island Motor Union advised that the quarterly meeting Vimuld be held at Waimute. —Messrs J. L. Passmore, P. W. Breen, G. H. Watte, and P. W. Curtis were appointed as the association’s dele*' gates. The Dunedin City Council wrote advising that special provision Was being made for the parking of cars at Carisbrook during representative football matches, and asked that the association should co-operate with the Traffic Department in making the arrangements. — Received. Mias Brenda Bell wrote suggesting the use of road signs on certain hernia on the Main North road on the town side of Mount Cargill. She described the pavement signs used in England—The matter was referred to the Signposting Committee. The Automobile Association (Southland) wrote asking tho Otago Association to consider erecting certain direction signs on the main roads leading from Otago to Invercargill. It wag the intention of tho Southland Association to reciprocate by erecting signs directing motorists to Dunedin from anywhere in its district that the Otago Association might desire.—Mr W. J. MTnncs said he thought tho Southland Association was asking for too much.—The letter was referred to the Signposting Committee, BEACH RACES. A deputation from the motor cycle section waited upon the executive to ask permission to hold a beach race meeting.— Tho chairman Outlined the attitude of the association, referring to an action for damages which had been brought by a motorist whose ear had been bogged on the beach on the occasion of the last beach races. He also suggested that the action of the motor cycle section in sending a deputation might be regarded in the light of a slur on the section’s three representatives on the executive. These representatives had looked after the interests of the motor cyclists to the fullest extent. Ho assured the deputation that its representaions would receive careful consideration. ASSISTANT SECRETARY APPOINTED. Mr P. Harre was appointed to the position of assistant secretary of the association. There were 89 applications. ROAD SERVICE. The Rond Service Committee reported that the total cost to date was £73 13s 2d. an average of 14s 8d per member serviced. ■ The committee recommended ■ the payment of accounts amounting to £6 Is Od. The report was adopted. LEGISLATION COMMITTEE. On behalf of the Legislation Committee, Mr E. J. Anderson reported as follows: A letter was received from the town clerk. Port Chalmers, requesting the association’s support for an application to have tlie main residential thoroughfare, along tlie peninsula, declared a highway. —Recommend that wc support this application. The City Council advises that it has agreed to make special provision for tho parking of visitors’ oars on the occasion of the interprovincial football matches. —•' Recommend that the secretary should cooperate with the traffic inspector to further this matter. The report was adopted. NEW CLUB ROOMS. A report was presented on the proposal to obtain new club rooms, and it was recommended that the whole matter should be referred to the annual meeting. —Agreed. MEMBERSHIP. The secretary submitted 31-nominations for membership. I which were approved. Resignations totalling 25 wore accepted. SERVICES APPRECIATED. The chairman referred to the fact that Countable J. Oswald was no longer to ho found on point duly at the Stock Exchange. On his motion, a resolution expressing appreciation of Constable Oswald’s courteous services and regret at the fact that these were no longer available was carried, and it was decided to forward a copy of tlie resolution to th® superintendent of police.
