BABIES IN AIR RAIDS
Gas-proof “cradles” for babies being nursed by their mothers have been invented by a group of Soviet doctors and engineers working at the Moscow Sani-tary-Chemical Institute. Each “ cradle ” consists of a bag equipped with gas filters. The bag completely encloses the child, and is joined by a tube to the mask worn by the mother. Her breathing draws purified air into the child’s hag ns well as her own mask. A cellophane window in the bag allows her to watch the child. These “cradles” can also be attached to air reservoirs—large gas-proof sacks containing a supply of purified air, which is replenished by means of bellows.’ As many as 15 or 20 children, can breathe from one such reservoir, it is stated. Full tests have been made of the new apparatus, and it is claimed to be so successful that mass production will probably soon begin. Young children, the designers state, are, unable to breathe when wearing an ordinary mask.
