FALSE STATEMENTS
COMPENSATION WRONGLY OBTAINED WATERSIDE WORKER’S FRAUDS (Peb United Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 9. William John Knowles, aged 30, a waterside worker, pleaded guilty in the Police Court to-day to four charges of obtaining money from three shipping companies and the Harbour Board, and to eight charges of making false statements for the purpose of obtaining benefit under the Unemployment Act. The lU'st 'four charges related to compensation for injuries, received from the companies and the board at times which were shown to interlap, in addition to which a false name was used, as he could not use his own. He also received sustenance from the unemnloyment authorities. He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour on each of the four false pretences charges, the first two terms to be cumulative, and was • fined £lO and costs on the first of the false statement charges. ______________
