FIRST ANGLICAN BISHOP
CENTENARY OF CONSECRATION CELEBRATIONS IN SYDNEY SYDNEY, May 24. (Received May 24, at 11 p.m.) To-day being preparatory Sunday for the Bishop Broughton centenary celebrations, Dr Averill, Primate of New Zealand, preached at St. James's Church in the city this morning and at St. Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney, in the evening. With the other visiting bishops he also addressed a special Empire Day service this afternoon at the cathedral. Bishop Hilliard, of Nelson, preached at St. John's, Ashfield, in the morning, and at St. Thomas's, Rozelle, in the evening. Visitors to Sydney for the celebrations which mark the centenary of the consecration of Bishop Broughton, the first Anglican Bishop of Australia, include Dr Charles F. D'Arcy, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of all Ireland, Dr Foss Westcott, Bishop of Cutta, Dr Y. P. Matsui, Bishop of Tokio, Dr G. Graham Brown, Bishop of Jerusalem, Archbishop Averill, of New Zealand, the Right Rev. W. G. Hilliard, Bishop of Nelson, the Right Rev. J\ A. Bennett, Bishop Suffragan of Abtca-roa, Professor J. R. Elder, Otago University, Dr H. F. Lefanu, Archbishop of Perth and Primate of Australia, and a large gathering of archbishops and bishops from all parts of Australia. The official programme includes a church congress, a missionary exhibition, pilgrimages to Broughton churches, a demonstration by Sunday school children at Sydney Show Ground, historical aiitl dioces/in festivals, and a commemorative service at St. James Church, Sydney, marking the anniversary of the installation of Bishop Broughton on June 5. 1830.
