WORK OF PARLIAMENT

BUSY WEEK ANTICIPATED IMPORTANT MEASURES AWAITED • EXTENSION OF SESSION LIKELY (Fkom Oui» Paruamextart Reporter) WELLINGTON*, May 24., Although a busy week is ahead of Parliament it will he less exhausting than was anticipated owing to the decision not to begin Monday sittings this week. It is not yet certain whether the House will sit nest Saturday, but there is a prospect of one or two late sittings dining the week. ■ The Cabinet met yesterday morning and dealt with several administrative questions, but no decisions were reached on policy matters. Another meeting will be held to-morrow. In the evening the Prime Minister. Mr Savage, will leave for Hamilton, where he will open the Waikato Winter Show on Tuesday. Mr Savage will return to Wellington on Wednesday morning. The iitst legislative business -this week will be the third 1 reading of the Transport Licensing Amendment Bill, but it is not expected that the debate will be unduly long as the measure has been thoroughly discussed in the House sinco its introductiftn. If the present plans are adhered to the first of the new Bills still to be introduced before the midwinter recess will be a Bill dealing with the reconstruction of the Mortgage Corporation on the lines of the State Advances Department, which the corporation replaced. The provisions of the Bill have already been approved by a caucus of the Government Party and the measure is now in the hands of the law draftsman. The Prime Minister stated yesterday that he could not give the exact date of its introduction, but it would appear fairly soon. Another Bill which is likely to come before the House in the near future will deal with rents, particularly in the direction of safeguarding tenants against exorbitant increases in rents. Its main provision, however, will prevent the eviction of any tenant until the circumstances have been reviewed by a magistrate. Magistrates will be given greater power than at present to deal with such applications. No date has yet been mentioned for the introduction of the Finance Bill, which will .contain a general order restoring wages and salaries to the 1931 level, biit it is certain to appear before the recess. It does not appear likely now that the House will rise at the end of the month. Indeed, there are indications that the adjournment may not occur be- . fore June 11 ,or 12.
