FIXTURES March 21. v. South Otago. March 21 and 23. —Adess Shield matches and leads and seconds tournament. March 28. —Otago v. Canterbury, at Duncdin. April 10, 11, 13, and 14.—Easter tournament. HARRAWAY SHIELD MATCH The annual Harraway Shield match, between the Otago and Southland representative bowls teams, was played on the Southland Club's green on Saturday afternoon and resulted in a win for Otagc by 199 points to 166. Otago has held the shield since it defeated Southland in 1932. The conditions were not conducive to the highest standard of bowling. The Southland green was heavy and during the afternoon hail and rain showers made accurate drawing difficult. There was a good attendance of spectators. A start was made about three o'clock. Right from the outset the Otago bowlers found the green, and the visitors took a lead which the Southlanders could not overtake. The game finished in Otago's favour by 33 points. Five Otago rinks were "up" arid three were "down." All round the Southland team was beaten for steadiness in the draw. H. Gardiner's rink—F. Lambeth, J. H. Hinton, J. M'Gregor and H. Gardinerhad a runaway victory over P. J. Eccleton. The Dunedin men went quickly into the lead and led by 14 points to 2 on the eighth head. On the next six heads Southland did a little better, the scores being 19—10 in Dunedin's favour on the fourteenth head. Of the remaining 11 heads Gardiner took nine and Eccleton two, the final scores being: Gardiner 34, Eccleton 12. ' , Close scoring marked the opening heads between Nelson's rink (J. M'Millan, D. O'Connell, D. Bennie and G. A. Nelson) and N. M'Gorlick, the scores being nine points to eight in Nelson's favour on the tenth head. Steady play by M'Gorlick's men enabled them to draw steadily away from the Dunedin quartet, the score board on the eighteenth head showing 20 points to 11 in Southland's favour. On the remaining heads M'Gorlick scored nine to Nelson's five to win by 26 points to 16. T. Ferguson's rink (J. C. Buist, C. E. Timlin, G. G. Adess and T. Ferguson) monopolised the scoring in the early stages of the game against W. Irving, the tallies on the eighth head being 15—1 in Dunedin's favour. The Southlanders (hen altered the whole complexion of the game bv seonr.c; 13 p./jnts on the n-;xt five heads (including two fours to a brace by Dunedin, the latter then leading by 16 points to 14. Ferguson again built up a good lead by scoring five to Irving's one on the next five heads, the totals on the seventeenth end being 21 to 15 in Dunedin's favour. A two and a five to Southland gave the latter the lead for. the first time in the game, but Dunedin finished strongly, scoring nine points on the last five heads to win by 30 points J. ' Veitch's rink (J. Tonkin, A. French, W. Connor, and J. Veitch.) started well against S. Smith, scoring five points to one on the first four heads, but on the sixth head Southland drew level—--5 all. A single and a four to Veitch and a brace to Smith made the tallies 10 —7 in Veitch's favour on the ninth head. A three to Smith made the game again all square, and two singles and a three placed Southland in front—l5 —10. Dunedin took the next three heads to reduce his deficit to two, but the Southland men were now keyed up, and two singles and a three gave them a lead of 20 —13 on the nineteenth head. The final six heads saw another nine points added to Smith's tally; while Veitch added a couple of singles. Smith thus won by 29 points to 15. J. MTtendry (Southland) had a comfortable win over W. Walton's rink (J. Thomas, F. Smith, W. Finlay, and W. Walton). The game was evenly contested up to the. twenty-second head when the scores were level—l 7 all. The final three heads saw the Southlanders score a four, two, and five to win by 28 points The game between A. Macdonald (C. H. Mackay, J. J. Read. J. Buchan and A. Macdonald) and D. Torrance (Southland) was remarkable for the fluctuating nature of the scoreß. Torrance led off with six on the first three heads, Macdonald responding with a one and a two. Two twos and a single gave Torrance a lead of 11 points to 3 on the eighth head, but a two and a five to Dunedin made the totals 11 all on the tenth head. Macdonald led for the first time on the twelfth head when the scores were 14— 12 but a three to Torrance placed Southland one to the good. The next three heads yielded a single on each to Macdonald to make him two up, but a single and a brace to Southland again gave the latter a one-point lead. The final stages were just as keenly fought, but the scoring favoured Macdonald, who finished with a lead of five points-25—20. Tyrrell's rink (E. J. Smith W. J. M'Kay, W. Callender, and C. E. Tyrrell) had an easy victory over W. Buchanan. The latter started promisingly and led by six points to two on the .fourth head and by seven points to five on the seventh, but Tyrrell then took command and scored on every other head with the exception of four, winning by the big margin of 34 points to 14. tii a S. Hutchison's rink (W. Johnston. A. Honeyman, J. Seddon, and S. Hutchison) had all the better of the game against D. Shaw, and won by 28 points to 16. Shaw led by seven points to four on the seventh head, but a 3 to Hutchison on the eighth brought the scores level, and Dunedin then drew ahead rapidly, leading by 21 points to eight on the fourteenth, head and 23 to 11 on the nineteenth. Hutchison scored on four and Shaw on two of the remaining six heads. SOUTH OTAGO SINGLES The final to decide the Milton Club's Singles Champion for the current season was played between P. Davanney and A. F. Wethey. The former won by five points, and represented the local club in the South Otago Champion of Champions Singles, played at Balclutha on Saturday afternoon. , . Five clubs were represented in the championship singles contest, namely. Ksutangata, P. Prescott; Balclutha, 1. H. Parkinson; Stirling, J. Walls; Benhar, B. Harraway; Milton, P. Davanney. At the conclusion of the fourth round Davanney and Prescott were the only players with three victories, and they met for the final, which was keenly contested throughout. Prescott won by the solitary point (20—19). thus, gaining the South Otago Singles Championship honours for the third year in succession. CENTRAL OTAGO NOTES The holders (Clyde) of the Jolly Memorial Cup had a very easy wm on Thursday against a Ranfurly rink. The scores were:—G. Larking, J. Holt. a. E Stevens, J. L. Davidson 27, W. Helm, A! Gardiner, M. Hanrahan, M. Beattie' 9. The Central Otago Champion of Champions competition will be held at Clyde next Saturday. "HAS-BEENS" In last week's notes the following paragraph appeared: — George Deare, an ex-member of the Dunedin Club, who went later to Wellington, is now at the City Club, Sydney, and savs he will remain in Australia till the end of the year, at least. Discussing champions of the Dominion (writes " Boomerang" in the Sydney Referee), he that Foster, Brackenridge, Carswell, Harraway, Coltman, and others arc " has-beens" implying that they are spent forces. Wiilly Bleach, who has won the Canterbury championship at 73, demonstrated that the "has-beens" sometimes come to light. Unfortunately, we arc prone to regard as "has-beens" many men whom the other fellows boats but whom wo wore not able to overcome ourselves. Since the publication u f the above paragraph a member of the Dunedin Bowling Club has received a letter from Mr Deare, in which he indignantly denies having made the statement attributed to him by " Boomerang." He explains that in a conversation with " Boomerang" the latter made reference to Mr Foster and D. Scott, of Dunedin as well as other leading players in New Zealand, and Mr Deare informed him that neither of the Dunedin men referred to was in good health at the present time, the one suffering from asthma and the other from neuritis. ___________
