AUCKLAND HOSPITAL

MEDICAL STAFF VACANCIES A DEARTH OF APPLICANTS (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 17. Members of the Auckland Hospital Board expressed concern to-day when it was reported that no applications had been received in response to advertisements for a medical admitting officer and for junior and senior house surgeons and physicians. It was stated that advertising in Australia had been considered, but a member of the honorary staff, while on a visit, had interviewed the dean of the Sydney Medical, School, who considered it extremely unlikely that any resident medical officers would be available from there. The medical superintendent (Dr Craven), when asked whether the salary was an obstacle, said there was an unusual shortage of young men and some other hospitals had offered up to £275 a year.

The chairman (Mr W. Wallace) said lie had been assured that any number of men were available in England. He was not happy about the present staffing of the hospital, especially as the staff included so many students. He did not like the prospect that a big accident might occur at night while a student was in charge of admissions. More senior residents would have to be appointed. The board adopted a motion by Dr Gunson that a report be obtained from the staff executive committee.
