Arrested at Napier and brought to Pahiatua, where he was remanded on a, charge of assault on March <>. a, vagrant (Walter Bishop) appeared before justices of the peace yesterday on a further charge of arson in connection with (lie destruction of a seven-roomed house owned by Charles Beetham. Bishop made a statement, which Detective Bickerdike produced in court, admitting an assault on a farmer named Hull. It was committed in a fit of rage, as the result of an altercation while at the latter’s farm seeking a meal. The accused also made a full admission of the burning of Bectham’s house, saying: “I did this because I felt fed up with things, and I bad already set fire to two places at that time, and did not worry about what 1 did.” On the accused pleading guilty, lie was committed to the Wellington Supreme Court for sentence, and was convicted and discharged on the assault charge.
