THE LUNAR RAINBOW

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —A local in your issue of either Wednesday or Thursday of last week mentioned that a lunar rainbow had been witnessed on the preceding evening, and, in describing the phenomenon, gave a description appropriate only’ to the corona, popularly known as the ring round the moon. Your spectator, not having advised himself as to the form or the position in the sky of the rare rainbow, mistook a corona for the rainbow, and has yet to see the latter. The rainbow neither assumes the form of a ring nor appears in the region of the moon. It is reflected always in the sky opposite the moon and in the shape of a bow or arch. The spectator who views it has his back to the satellite. —I am, etc., Moondeam.
