THE Otago Daily Times. “Inveniam viam aut faciam.” DUNEDIN, SATURDAY, MARCH 18, 1865. SHIPPING.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

PORT CHALMERS.— March 17. An adventurous crew and three passengers took their departure to-day from Port Chalmers Jetty in a decked boat of very tiny proportions, in which few would be inclined to proceed outside the Heads, but which was duly entered at the Custom House ns the sailing ship Alhambra, of 9 tons register, under command of Captain Peters, and bound for Okitiki. The owner of her has been in the habit of cruising about Stewart’s Island and other parts of the coast with his small craft, and he feels confident of making as comfortable a passage as many other larger and better found vessels. SHIPPING SUMMARY. Though only one of the several home vessels advised as having sailed for this port has arrived during the month, the number of colonial arrivals, the departure of several wool ships, and the traffic created by a new rush to the West Coast have fully maintained the recent average of arrivals and departures of shipping. The one arrival from home has been the Lady Ann, which arrived off the Port on the Bth of March. . . . In consequence of the excitement about the Okitiki diggings, the number of seafaring men offering for vessels bound to home and other ports has somewhat suddenly diminished; higher rates of wages are being asked; and, since receipt of the news, several have deserted their ships. The third day of the trial of William Andrew Jarvey for murder was almost wholly occupied by the evidence of Dr Hulme, Provincial Surgeon, and the examination in chief of Dr Macadam, Government Analyst of Victoria. . . . The Canterbury people seem sorely perplexed to find a practicable road through their own Province. . . . Yesterday was St. Patrick’s Day. It would have been observed as a Bank holiday, but in consequence of the departure of the English Mail to-day, the banks were kept open for the public convenience. Throughout the day flags were floating from a number of the hotels and other places in honor of the occasion. The “Lyttelton Times” of Thursday, gives prominence to the following notice, which it published by request, and which was placarded throughout the town: — “Lakes Station, March 13. —Sir —Hundreds of people are coming here without urovisions. I am much afraid I shall not be able to keep my provisions. Something ought to be done to impress on the people that there is nothing to be had at Taylor’s. Everything is eaten up except the stock. —I am, &c., Walter Blake. Hon. J. Hall. P.S. I have sent a man back with notices to let the people know we have nothing here.”
