CRICKET

UNIVERSITY TEAMS MEET OTAGO DISMISSED FOR 163 Honours remained even at the conclusion of the first day’s play in the annual cricket match between Otago University and Canterbury College at Logan Park yesterday. Batting first, Otago made 163, and Canterbury had lost six wickets for 122 at the drawing of stumps. Rain interrupted play twice for short intervals in the morning, and the weather remained cold throughout the day. The wicket suffered as a result of the rain, and the ball rose at varying heights. The match will be concluded to-day. Otago suffered an early loss through the dismissal of M’Lachlan with the second ball of the match, and Hoggans, his partner, found difficulty in getting the ball away. Uttley, however, batted with freedom and hit six fours before lie was dismissed by a high slip catch with a score of 32. Henderson, though more cautious than usual, lifted Alpers for a six, and four fours were also included in his 34 runs. Though some ’ of the others made useful scores, they could not stay long enough to enable Otago to build up a total that would leave Canterbury at a serious disadvantage. The seventh wicket fell at 123, and two more were lost for only nine runs. The last wicket partnership, however, was the most productive of the innings, Farrell and Lawson showing stubborn defence and scoring mainly with singles. The innings concluded at 163 when Farrell played a ball on to his wicket. Alpers and Arneson, who bowled all but 10 overs between them, shared the bowling honours. Byrne and Hay opened Canterbury’s innings slowly, and after 25 minutes’ batting the score at the adjournment was 17. In the first over on the resumption Begg had Hay caught behind the wickets. Two more wickets went quickly, and when Byrne, who had batted stubbornly, was beaten, four were down for 31. Somerville had made a promising start, showing a willingness to hit, but, with one run added, he was run out by yards as the result of brilliant fielding by Uttley. After a dull period, Dougall and J. C. Saunders changed their tactics and launched a successful attack on the bowling They carried the score to the century before Dougall, who had been especially aggressive, was dismissed at 37. Saunders was undefeated at 39 when stumps were drawn. Scores: — OTAGO UNIVERSITY. First Innings.
