CASHIER COMPLIMENTED
CAPTURE OF BANK RAIDER “ I wish all bank officials were as prompt' and as fast runners as you are,” remarked Mr Walter Davies, chairman of Ealing magistrates, London, in complimenting Mr Roy Darlington, a bank cashier, for the way he tackled a man who carried out a daylight raid on Barclays Bank, Ealing Broadway. Thomas Weston, aged 43, labourer, of no fixed address, was sentenced to six months’ hard labour for stealing £7B In notes from the bank. Mr Darlington told the magistrates:— “ I was attending to two customers at the counter when I saw a hand reach over the grill and snatch a bundle of notes. I looked up and saw a man on the counter holding on to the grill with his right hand and thrusting a bundle of notes into his pocket with his left hand.
“He jumped down, and I shouted * Stop that man! ’ I jumped on to the counter and over the grill, and chased him along the Broadway into Oxford road, where I caught him.” Police Constable Berry related that he saw Darlington catch hold of Weston and bring him to the pavement. On being arrested, Weston said, “It Is all right. I will give you all the notes I have.” On his being searched £7B in notes were found in his overcoat pocket. Twenty previous convictions were recorded against Weston, including sentences for being a reputed thief.
