EDUCATION POLICY
PLANS FOR RECONSTRUCTION INCREASED EXPENDITURE FORESHADOWED (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 16. With the co-operation of the education authorities, the Minister of Education (Mr P. Fraser) hopes to reconstruct the educational policy. The Minister told the Auckland Board this morning that there was a big task ahead, not merely concerning administrative functions, but the arrears which had accumulated. It was impossible to deal immediately with all the problems of overcrowding or to modernise buildings and playing areas, but it was at least possible to set a goal and to see that in a reasonable period of years an attempt was made to overtake the arrears which had accumulated to such an alarming extent in the depression years.
The work would involve a large expenditure, but the position had to be faced. The Minister expressed appreciation of the offers of assistance received from boards, committees, secondary and technical boards and university councils, the desire to help being almost overwhelming. He paid a tribute to the devotion and enthusiasm of board and committee members throughout New Zealand.
