EUROPEAN CRISIS
BRITAIN’S STAND ADMIRED MR EDEN AS PEACEMAKER TRIBUTE PAID BY MR SEMPLE (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 10. Admiration for the stand the British Government was taking in the present crisis in Europe was expressed by the Minister of Public Works (Mr R. Semple) when speaking at Lyall Bay. He said anything the New Zealand Government could do to assist the British authorities to prevent the calamity that was threatened would be done. There never was a time in the history of the human family when we needed more of the Christian principle practised in our daily lives. His Ministerial position brought him into close touch with events taking place in Europe. He did not want to strike a note of fear, but all Ihe statesmanship, all the courage and all the tolerance that British statesmen could command would have to- be brought to bear to try and prevent the threatened calamity —a calamity that would, if it took place, engulf civilisation. Mr Semple added that he was proud of the stand the British Government was taking. Mr Anthony Eden was a real peacemaker at the conference of Powers taking place in London. He was satisfied that, if Mr Eden’s advice and warnings were accepted, this threatened calamity would vanish.
