The house was already burning fiercely and nothing could be done to save it.
The house, which was a landmark in the district, contained more than 40 rooms. Arrangements had recently been made to pull down the house for the timber, which was all heart of totara and heart of kauri in good preservation. The work of demolition should have begun to-day. The house, which was the property of the estate of Mr J. Connolly, former member for Mid-Canterbury, was insured for £2OOO in the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation.
