WELLINGTON RACING CLUB

AUTUMN MEETING CONTINUED BIG RACE TO GREEK SHEPHERD ENTHEOS AND PAKANUI AGAIN (From Our Special Reporter) WELLINGTON. March 16. The Wellington Racing Chib’s autumn meeting was continued in fine weather, and attracted a fairly large attendance. The going was excellent, and again received attention after each race. Variant looked a winner down the running in the Rougotai Handicap when in charge of the field, but she failed to stall off a strong challenge from Big Dook. The Karitane Handicap saw Karl win well, and there was very little between the next four. Pelmet and Double Gift had every chance, but were ,not good enough. Greek Shepherd won the Autumn Handicap from Argentic, and Queen of Song ran a much better race than generally expected, while Senior ran an ungenerous i ac’, and far below expectations based on Wingatui form. Shy should have won the Tasman Handicap, in which he just failed to get third after having to make up a lot of ground ever the final three furlongs. Friesland beat Rereatu in a .good battle Cor the March Handicap, and Silver Streak covered a good deal of ground on the outside of the field when coming from second last at three furlongs from home. Erua won the Belmont Handicap after an excellent race. Entheos was the popular pick for the Rimu High-weight Handicap, in which Brown Pearl and Peter’s Pence made the running from Nightlase. Entheos moved up as they turned for home and then came on to win comfortably by nearly two lengtlis from Earl Colossus, who beat Blue Tiger by a short neck, with Royal Papa next. The leaders went too fast to last. The winner should win in better company, and stays well. They went for Le Grand in the Totara Maiden Stakes, and he was not prominent in the early stages, Lift ran into second place behind Alloa at the distance. Le Grand then wore down Alloa and won by half a length. Toper was next, three lengths away, with Martial Lady, Camilla Horn, and Ayresleigh next. Variant and Fracas were the popular selections for the Rongotai Handicap, with Big Dook next in demand. Hunting Lodge led Variant to the' far turn, with the rest handy. Variant had Hunting Lodge beaten as they straightened tor home and looked a sure winner, but inside the distance Big Dook came through on the rails and beat the favourite. Variant did not make a good response when called on in the last 100 yards when Big Dook put in a claim. Fracas, after being last all the way, got up to beat Sunee for a Lass, Karl and Wagner were much in demand for the Karitane Handicap. Laughing Lass, Karl, Top Notch, Wagner, and Pelmet were smartest away, and Double Gift joined up on the outside as they straightened for home. Laughing Lass dropped out, and Karl, staying on, won by one length and a-half. Entail was struck out of the Autumn Handicap, and Greek'Shepherd started a much better favourite than Senior, Queen of Song "and Korero led past the stand, but Greek Shepherd took charge shortly after reaching the back stretch with Queen of Song, Hunting Cat and Argentic next. Senior, who had lost ground in the first quarter of a mile, had to be ridden up to get near the leaders. Greek Shepherd, Argentic, Hunting Cat, and Queen of Song were in charge coming round the top, and Argentic put in a challenge to Greek Shepherd alter reaching the straight, but the latter came away and won by two lengths. Queen of bong just beat Hunting Cat for a place, and Tunneller and Arctic King were close up. Vinco and Hunting Mars were smattest awav. Shy, Silver Jest, and Portene were slow away, and Hunting Mars took charge from Vinco, Pakanui, and Silver Jest. Shy was still second last, but moved up on the outside. Hunting Mars Jed into the straight, where the field closed up. Chief Ranger, _ Pakanui, and Silver Jest closed up, and in a good finish Pakanui beat* Chief Ranger by a neck. Hunting Mars was the same distance away, with Shy almost on terms with him. Rival Shot and Silver Jest were right up with the placed lot. Shy made up a lot of ground, and, better placed in the early stages, must have wqn. , The March Handicap was a good bet tine race. Davolo was last away in a move-in start. Beau Gallante and Rereatu showed the way.audtheJatterwent out to a couple of lengths LJ coonng round the top, where Silver anP Davolo were at the tai! of thefield. ® ; . au Gallante led Rereatu into the: stra ght, where Friesland moved up and Silver Streak came round on the outside of the field. Haut Monde also improved hm nosition, and Rereatu wore down Beau Gallante, but failed to stall off Fnesland who won by a head. Silver Streak was two lengths and a-half away, just beating Beau Gallante, Haut Monde, and Prostrati0 Dungarvan, Ponty, Debham, ami The Intake were the pacemakers in the Bel mont Handicap, and turned for home in front of the field, and Dungarvan and Ponty looked dangerous inside the il s tance where they were in charge of the field but Erua came with a strong run and Maine also appeared on th % sc ®" e ‘ 3 2 ood finish home saw Erua get up and beat Dungarvan, with Maine a close third. Pontv faded in the last bit but still finished a good fourth, with Debham close UP The tolalisator handled £28,450. The Gay Chief inquiry was adjourned till to-morrow to get the evidence o rider, P. Burgess. w An inquiry was held into • Broughton s handling of Korero the Autumn Handicap, and the decision ot the Judicial Committee was that he committed an error of judgment, but tnere was nothing to warrant further neti n.
