TROTTING NOTES

Bv Sentinel.

One of F. J. Smith’s Team Worthy Rose is a fine-looking three-year-old by Frank Worthy from Roma Bingen. She mav be raced at the Hawera and Manawatu meetings by F. J. Smith. She was showing promise when in work earlier in the season, and has derived a lot o£,benefit from a good spell. Worthy Rose is stockily built and possesses a useful turn of speed. The Leading Sire '

Rey de Oro, who is 18’ year's old, was imported frofn America by Free Holmes in 1922. He is ‘by Copa de Oro (trial Imin 59sec) from SUrbito, dam of White Sox, 2min 3;}sec, Blanche, 2min G.jsee, Miss Rico, 2min 3isec, and The Lark. 2min SJsec. Surbito was by Steinway from Jenny M‘K.. 2min 9see. by M Kinney. 2min llsce .; .•< A Slow First Mile

Nominally a two-mile handicap, the Timaru Cup might just as well have been run as a free-for-all Over a mile. Agile, Battlefield and Gunfire, who broke at the start, were able to make up tbeir leeway without effort in the first four furlongs, and the leader’s time for the first mile was outside 2min 30sec, and it was not until. Little Nelson’s driver loosened ms grip seven furlongs from home that the pace went on.

Bad Start, Good Finish Willow Wave appears to do best when he jibs at the start and hands away several seconds. At the January meeting at Washdyke he began twice like a shot from a gun, and then petered out like a non-stayer. In Saturday s race he looked to be in a hopeless position a mile from the end, and came home like a flying machine.

Frisco Lady and Pot Luck After her easy victory in the Champion Stakes on Boxing Day, Frisco Lady was rightly regarded ag the champion three-year-old, but it looks certain that she will lose her title if she meets Pot Luck. The Jack Potts gelding hag improved' out ot knowledge since the filly beat him at Ashburton, and he mows the opposition down so easily that there is no method of estimating just how good he ia. Will Make Amends

King’s Knight was produced in only one race at the recent Auckland meeting, but met with interference after the field had cone about two furlongs, and this completely settled any chance he had. He was paraded in excellent - order, and at the time of the incident was in a handy position. King’s Knight displayed rare promise when he won his first race at the Cambridge meeting last month, and a good future is predicted for him. Southland Find <

Stirling Lady has been one of the finds of the season- in Southland, In eight starts she has won on thrqc occasions, been second twice and third once. In compiling this record she registered a Southland winning record of 3min 21see for a mile and a-half. Stirling Lady is a freak pacer, and it cannot be said that she is bred on the lines of a champion. Her sire. Nelson Adonis, was a failure as a racehorse, and he was later gelded. Nelson Adonis wag by Nelson Bingen from Lady Adonis, who also left Ozanuin, an average sort. The dam of Stirling Lady was Stirling M'Kinney, a mare who did not win a race, and who was goL by Young M'Kinney from Misfortune, the latter the dam of a successful linet m Southland, vlhich includes Nelsons Victory and Erin’s Fortune.

All Age Stake* The All Age Stakes to be decided at the Ashburton Trotting Club s autumn meeting will provide something of a novelty in light-harness racing. In the progi'cimme to hand the following conditions governing the race are given;- All Age Stakes, of one mile and a-half. A sweepstake of 20sovs each, payable at time of entry, with a stake of 400sovs added. Winner to receive 65 per cent, of the total of the sweepstake and stake, second horse 20 per cent., third horse 10 per cent, and fourth hoiae 5 per cent. Three-year-olds (scr), four-year-olde (COyds), nve-vear-olds (84yds). six-year-olds and aged horses (108yds). Penalties—Threc-year-,olds: Winners of New Zealand Derby and/or Great Northern Derby and/or New Zealand Champion Stakes, 12 yards behind, four-year-olds: Winners of New Zealand Derbv and/or Great Northern Derby and/or New Zealand Champion Stakes, 72 yards behind: six-year-olds and aged horses; Winner of last Free-for-all, 120yds behind.” It is explained in a further message from the secretary of > the Ashburton Trotting Club that tne placed horses will be penalised only as though they had been entered for their correct class according to present assessment. The field is likely to be restricted and the aim of the club is apparently to secure the appearance of only the best horses Accordin" to the rules laid down, the last Free-for-all winner, Indianapolis, will start from 120 yards behind, and will concede 108 yards to the three-year-olds Frisco Lady, winner of the Champion Stakes, and Double Great.j winner of the New Zealand Derby; other star three-year-olds. Pot Luck and Blair Athol.' will receive 120 yards from Indianapolis. Four-year-olds and others will be on the intermediate marks.
