A SECOND SINGAPORE
TABLE BAY NAVAL BASE ROBBEN ISLAND TO BE FORTIFIED CAPETOWN, March 13. A decision lias been made to fortify intensiyely Eohben Island, which is part of the scheme to make Table Bay a second Singapore. The heavy guns at Lion’s Head cannot be fired as a full charge would blow the closely-inhabited seaport to pieces. The Table Bay works arc being developed at a cost of £10,000,000 to enable vessels of the heaviest tonnage to dock. It is believed that it is the intention of the Government to proceed with a big equipment scheme as the result of which Table Bay will supersede Simonstown as the naval port. Rohben Island was formerly a leper settlement and has since been unoccupied except by lighthouse keepers.
