BRILLIANT SILVER RING

WIN IN THOMPSON HANDICAP THE SPRINT TO SILVER STREAK 0 ENTAIL BEATS GREEK SHEPHERD

(From Our Special Reporter) WELLINGTON, Marcfi 14. The Wellington Racing Club’s meeting was opened in fine weather, but a boisterous wind sprang up in the latter part of the afternoon. There was a large attendance, and, ■ although the track provided good going, it did not assist fast time. The track was rolled after each race. The card provided some excellent racing, and Silver Ring stamped himself as a triton among minnows by winning the Thompson Handicap in brilliant style. The win waa very popular, and enthusiastic appreciation of the performance greeted horse and rider as they returned to the birdcage. Variant appeared to be the only unlucky runner, as she got a bad passage in the run up the straight. Silver Ring started a most remarkable sequence of double wins, and Silver Streak completed it by winning the Railway Handicap. in which he outclassed the opposition. This made the fourth time that Silver Ring and Silver Streak have landed a double at important meetings. An interesting race was supplied by the St. Leger, in which Entail, under vigorous riding, managed to make the winning stride over Greek Shepherd as they flashed past the post. They were locked together over the, final 100 yards.

Taumau endeavoured to win all the way, but Entheos was always handy, and outstayed him. N.Z. ST. LEGER STAKES, Of 300sovs. One mile and three-quarters. 2 G. M. Acceptances for the second clay of the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting arc as follows: — 12.17 RIMU HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, Of 200sovs. One mile and a-quarler.

Summer Hill was made a solid favourite for tlie High-weight Handicap, but he ran a bad race. Taumau carried on the running from Entheos, Night Lass, and Chile as they ran down the back, with the favourite last, but apparently going well. Taumau was still in charge as they came round the top and to the straight. Summer Hill commenced to move up, but was still too far away from the leaders to win. Entheos and Chile challenged the leader inside the distance, Entheos beat Taumau by a length, and Chile finished three lengths away, with Blue Tiger. Grand Blow, Royal Papa, and Court Anna next.

Greek Shepherd was made a short oddson chance for the St. Leger. He pulled himself to the front in the first quarter of a mile, and then made the rest of the running with a solid pace on. They ran in close order to the home turn, where Greek Shepherd had Entail on his quarter and Happy Landing was close up. Greek Shepherd came past the distance travelling like a sure winner, as Entail was under pressure and the favourite going well. Entail closed on the favourite and they had a good fight. Over the final 100 yards they came on together, with Greek Shepherd still looking a winner, but in the last couple of strides Humphries made an extra call on his mount and he pipped the favourite by half a head. Happy Landing was over two lengths away. Greek Shepherd did not have his chance helped by being forced to make the running, and he still might have won if an earlier call had been made when Entail put in his challenge. Perhaps Ellis was just a shade too confident; A snap start as they moved in saw a ragged start for the Trial Plate owing to apparently some of the riders not being elert enough. Clarion Call, Black Frost, Martial Lady, Hunting Mars, and Impossible were the leaders to the far turn from a strung-out field. The order wms much the same as they swung round the home turn, and in a good finish Clarion Call stalled off Le Grand and won by a neck, Le Grand had to make up ground to put in his claim. Sansfoy also finished on two lengths away, with Impossible, Martial, Lady, Consummation, Hunting Main, and Night Spi next. The favourite, Peter’s Pence, never looked dangerous.

Gustos went out favourite for the Pacifice Handicap and won comfortably from Double Gift, who was the only one to finish near the winner. Gay Chief fell after going over two furlongs. Pelmet failed to show up, and the journey was too far for most of the field. . P. Burgess, the rider of Gay Chief, received a severe shaking and was sent to the hospital. Slippery was the only withdrawal from the Thompson Handicap. Queen of Song went down short in her preliminary and went out of favour. Confidence in a good horse was displayed by making Silver Ring favourite. A lot of trouble was caused at the post by Solaria, Passion Flower, and Beau Gallante, who were allowed too much latitude in holding up the field. Solaria was the worst offender, and he finally was side on behind the field when the barrier rose. Rereatu was the first to become prominent, with Silver Ring, Big Dook, and Passion Flower, Queen of Song drifted back before getting to the far turn, where Variant was in the bunch behind the leaders. Silver Ring dropped to about eighth after rounding the far turn. Rereatu 'was still in charge coming round the top, and led Friesland, Passion Flower, Big Dook, Solaria, Full Throttle, Gay Boy, Spiral and Variant round the home turn, where Silver Ring had improved hig position. Silver Ring and Variant came on in the straight, but the latter got blocked. 1 Friesland was the first to head Rereatu, and Passion Flower also put in a claim. Silver Ring came with a beautifully-timed run and got up to beat Friesland by a head. Variant was a length and a-half away, just beating Passion Flower in the last stride. Then came Big Dook, Rereatu and Gay Boy. Pakanui was the wiseacres’ tip for the Tinakori Handicap. He won. but had to be hard ridden to beat Grateful, who ran with him all the way. Roaming. Rival Shot, Brown Pearl, Erua and Boomerang were well enough placed at the home turn. Erua put up a good run to finish a close third. Silver Streak was made favourite for the Railway Handicap. The field gave a lot of trouble, and finally Bazaine got left. Acceptable, Knoekfin. Lordly Knight and Fulojoy were the early leaders from Dollar Bill, and Silver Streak, was second last as they entered the straight. The leaders went wide and Silver Streak came with a strong run on the rails and raced past the leaders to win by three lengths from Acceptable and Dollar Bill, who dead-heated‘for second place. Invoice was a head away fourth, followed by Fulojoy. Knoekfin and Lordly Knight. The winner put, up a fine performance, as after being a bit slow on bis legs be won going away at the finish. Royal Banquet. Pukeko, Rust. Kotou. OncWlietu and Dungarvan were theearly leaders from a moving start in the Silverstream Handicap. Dungarvan lost bis place and Maine also dropped back before, reaching Ihe far turn. Royal Banquet, Pukeko, Rust. Koton, Onewliolu • and Maine were the leading bunch at the turn, where Riptide drew up on the outside. A good race home saw Onewhetu win by half a length from Maine., who beat Pukeko by three lengths. Riptide was a head awav fourth, followed by Dungarvan, Geitcl, Ingenuity and Dnbbam.

The totalisator handled £37.38!), against £34,524 10s. an increase of £28(54 1 os. An inquiry into the fall and death of Gay Chief in the Pacific Handicap was adjourned to Monday. Following are the results; — HAEREMAI HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP,

Princess Onyx was withdrawn from the Kingsdown Handicap, and backers voted for Sphinx (321), Discord (248) and Tyrone Lass (222), Sir Kit, Harvest Dillon and Billy Sundy began badly, and Hon Giovanni broke after going a furlong. Chudleigh led Discord and Sphinx' past the box the first time, and at the back these three w'ere 50 yards ahead of the next bunch. With a lap to go Chudleigh, Discord and Sphinx were about 30 yards in advance of Harvest Dillon, Helens Bay and Ohineniutu, who were together, lie gaps closed up at the back, and at the far turn Chudleigli» Discord, Sphinx, Prince Harvester and Helen's Bay were fairly closely bunched. At the top Childleigh and 'Discord went away again and Discord trotted home a comfortable winner by two or three lengths from Chudleigh. Sphinx, who put in a skip at the top, was three lengths further back, and half a length ahead of Prince Harvester and Helen’s Bay was next. In a comparatively small field of mne in the Trial Handicap backers conceitt.rated on Peter Silk (540), Shrewdie (450) and Precious Metal (435). Trelesc, Dusky Prince, and Bandit did not begin so well as the others. Precious Metal led Andy Watson and Peter Silk out of the straight the first time, there being a gap to Colleen Wrack and Shrewdie. Before the mile post was reached Native Sou ■was hustled along* and passing the disc the order was Precious Metal, Ntitive bon f Andy Watson, Colleen Wrack, and Peter Silk. Commencing the last round Native Son and Colleen Wrack had taken charge from Precious Metal and Peter Silk, with Andy Watson and Shrewdie also close up. There was no alteration as they faced the wind along the back, but at the far turn Colleen Wrack was beaten, and the reading was Native Son, Peter Silk, Precious Metal, Shrewdie, Andy Watson. Native Son and Peter Silk turned for home together, but in the last furlong Precious Metal and Andy Watson joined in, and in a tight finish Precious Metal won by half a length from Native Son, with Andy Watson, finishing fast on the rails, a neck away. Peter Silk was half a length further back, with Shrewdie next. A strong nor’-wester was blowing down the track when the horses lined up for the Timaru Cup, the popular selections for which were Grace M'Elwyn (570), Little Nelson (519), and Peter Locanda (399). Agile, Battlefield, and Bingen Palm drew positions in the second line of the limit division, and the two firstnamed and Gunfire broke when barriers were released. Prairie King and Grace M'Elwyn led out from Peter Locanda, Bingen Palm, and Warcss, and passing the stand at a funeral pace the order was Prairie King, Grace M'Elwyn, and Peter Locanda, Warcss and Bingen Palm, with Battlefield, Recess, and Agile handy. Agile moved up fast at the eastern bend, and as they crawled past the mile post in 2rain 30 4-ssec the call was Prairie King, Agile, Peter Locanda, Waress, Grace M'Elwyn. Turning into the straight Little Nelson was given his head, and with a lap to go he was clear of Agile, Prairie King, Grace M'Elwyn, Peter Locanda, Waress, Avernus, and Recess. Sea Gift broke and dropped back last just after leaving the straight. The pace was cracked on up the back, and at the top the last time Little Nelson, Agile. Grace M'Elwyn, Prairie King, Peter Locanda, and Recess were fighting it out. Recess headed Agile, Peter Locanda, and Grace M'Elwyn into the straight, and looked like coming away, but Peter Locanda in the middle and Bingen Palm and Battlefield wide out all finished fast, and Recess got home by only three-quar-ters of a length from Peter Locanda, who beat Bingen Palm by a head, with Battlefield only a neck further back. Waress and Agile also, were close up. The star three-year-old Pot Luck was favourite for the Seadown Handicap, but his 382 units was not much above Casanova 338 and Cadiz-Southern Smile 336, and there was good backing for Colene Parrish, Purveyor, and Hidden Charm. Guv Mauritius whipped round at the start and was left, while Purveyor broke, and Pot Luck made a slight tangle. Hidden Charm, Loretta, Cadiz and Southern Smile began well from the front line, and at the mile station the reading was Hidden Charm, .Sudden Smile, Loretta, Cadiz, Oversight, Llewellyn’s Pet, and Colene Parrish. Casanova had • put in a break and dropped out. Southern Smile led out of the straight for Hip last lap from Hidden Charm, Loretta, Cadiz, Oversight, Llewellyn’s Pet, and Colene Parrish. At this stage Pot Luck had made up practically no ground, but once into the back stretch he was sent along, and going across the top he was flying round a bunch headed by Hidden Charm, Cadiz, Southern Smile, Colene Parrish, and Oversight. Hidden Charm and Pot Luck were first into the straight, and Pot Luck came away to win easily by two or three lengths from the mare. Colene Parrish was about a length behind Hidden Charm, with Oversight and Double Great only heads away.

VARIANT’S CHANCES TO-DAY (From Our Special Reporter) WELLINGTON. March 15. The six-strand barrier was used in connection with the High-weight Handicap. The field stood up to the tapes except Grand Blow, who held up the start. Finally they got away from a good line after two or three chances had been missed through waiting for Grand Blow. There is no doubt about the six-strand barrier steadying a field when lined up, but there was a repetition of granting far too much consideration to a fractious horse to the detriment of the rest of the field. Consideration bestowed on fractious horses also held up the starts for the Thompson Handicap and Railway Handicap and_wa s obviously unfair to the topweights in both races. It seems incomprehensible why stewards of a club do not give starters positive instructions to give fractious horses a minimum of consideration. Starters are apparently afraid to leave any horse, no matter how badly he behaves at the barrier, because it may place their position in jeopardy. Hence all appointments for starters, handicappers, and judges should rest entirely with the executive of the Racing Conference and not with any individual club. Such appointments should be the award of ability and open to prompt cancellation when not filled to complete satisfaction. A repetition of Senior’s form at the Dunedin Cup meeting would make him dangerous over 11 furlongs in the Autumn Handicap at Trentbam, Silver Ring beat him by a length in the Dunedin Cup and he appeared a bit unlucky in not getting the verdict over Tizzy at the D.J.C. meeting.

A meeting of the executive of the Racing Conference was held on Saturday night last, when it W'as decided that the Dunedin Jockey Club will be allotted the King’s Birthday dates for its winter meeting. It was also decided that Tizzy will remain on the schooling list. There was little or nothing between Entail and Greek Shepherd in the St. Leger, and Happy Landing, who was close up in an all-out finish, meets them on terms in the Autumn Handicap. That should give him a good chance of finishing in front of those of his own age. Argentic has been somewhat unlucky in his engamements this season, and has a chance to redeem past failures in the Autumn Handicap. Queen of Song will have to improve on her form in the Thompson Handicap to be granted a chance in the balance of her engagements at the meeting. Erua, Maine, and Dangarven will be amongst those fancied for the Belmont Handicap, and southerners will find support for Fonty in the same race.

Silver Streak won so well in the Railway Handicap that he must be dangerous again in the March Handicap, and Rere atu, Friesland, or Cranford may be dangerous in the same race. The Valkyriau horse Shy won over six furlongs at the Wellington Cup meeting in hnin II l-ssec, and may be found shaping well in the Tasman Handicap. Tunneller has won twice in his last two starts over a mile and n-quarter, but he may find it difficult to give weight to Senior in the Autumn Handicap. Pelmet got left at- the start of the Pacific Handicap, and may meet with better luck in the Karitane Handicap. She and Double Gift may. shape well. Variant shaped so well in the Thompson Handicap that she must come into favour for the Rongotai Handicap. The Diacquenod gelding Diamond, who displayed a lot of pace when racing over hurdles and fences last season, i« amongst those engaged in the Maiden Stakes at Trentham. Le Grand is a lusty looking colt got. by Posterity from Eulogy. He may be improved by bis race in the Trial Plate, and hence dangerous in the Totara Maiden Stakes. Enthos won so well on the first day at Trentham that he must be dangerous again in the Rimu High-weight Handicap. Taumau and Chile, who were nearest to him on the first day, are both out of the way, and the next best may be Peter’s Pence, who ran an unsatisfactory race in the Trial Plate. The Oaks winner, Lady Graceful, figures amongst the acceptors for the Rongotai Handicap.

All the final acceptors paraded for the Futurity Stakes, but speculators confined their attention to Southern Chief 693, Rapidian 277, Loyal Pat 265, Becky Direct 222, and William 169. Rapidian failed to begin well, and Gerfalcon and Royal Gratton soon lost their places. Loyal Pat and Becky Direct were first to break the line, but at the end of two furlongs Southern Chief, who was slow to move, sprinted to the front and led out of the straight from Becky Direct, Loyal Pat, and Peter Bee. There was no change until they raced to the far turn, where Peter Bee broke and checked one or two behind him. William also went to a break when fairly well placed at the top. Southern Chief led Becky Direct and Loyal Pat to the straight, and won by two lengths from Loyal Pat, who finished slightly better than Becky Direct and defeated her by three-quarters of a length. Parisienne was about three lengths away followed by Eflie Parrish and Peter Bee. Discord, penalised 30yds for her win, was made a £4 10s better favourite than Prince Harvester for the Temuka Handicap, the others in most request being Sphinx and Golden Bingen. Don Giovanni and Harvest Dillon made fatal mistakes early in the contest. Bosun took up the running from Tyrone Lass and Sphinx (who began smartly), and passing the 6tand the first time the order was Bosun, Tyrone Lass, and Sphinx, with Prince Harvester, Discord, and Golden Bingen racing in line about 10 lengths away. Prince Harvester speeded up along the back, and at the mile station the call was Bosun. Prince Harvester, Tyrone Lass, and Sphinx, with Discord handy. Prince Harvester and Bosun began the last round just celar of Olnnemutu, Sphinx, Tyrone Lass, and Discord, and at.the far turn Bosun was just showing out from Prince Harvester, lyroue Lass, Sphinx, and Discord, but at the hpinc turn Discord had run to the front from Prince Harvester. Discord looked like winning decisively a furlong from home, but Prince Harvester, trotting more evenly than in the first race, closed on her again, and Discord gamed the verdict by only a short head. Sphinx was about three lengths back, Bosun losing third money by a break near the post. Graham Direct (driven by F. Holmes, sen.), 749, was made a pronounced favourite for the Washdykc Handicap, from Peter Locanda 335, Reporter 323, Craganour 297, and Willow Wave 261. Bracken, Craganour, and Willow Wave all broke and lost ground at the start, Waress ami Peter Locanda wore first to show out. and at the mile post Waress. Svlvia Sydney, Homeward, and Peter Locanda were piloting a bunched field, the only one really tailed off being \\ illow Wave. Waress led past the stand from Graham Direct, Homeward, Sylvia Sydney, and Peter Locanda, with the lot now hunching. Reporter made a move turning into the back, and Supertax began to creep up, but Waress, Graham Direct, and Homeward hold their places. Racing across the top the order was Waress, Graham Direct, Homeward, Reporter, Peter Locanda, Supertax, and turning into the straight Waress and Graham Direct were being hard pressed by Reporter and Supertax. Supertax wore the others down, but Craganour and Willow Wave came from the clouds, and in a wonderful finish Supertax got home bv a head from Craganour. who heat Willow Wave bv a neck. At intervals of bends came Peter Locanda. Waress, Graham Direct, and Homeward Scratching!) reduced the field in the Wui-iti Handicap, but there were still 16 runners, of which Golden Mist 492, Over-sight-River Roydon 491, Coleno Parrish 374, and Jean Dnisns 366 had most adherents. Lady Hannah and Casanova were caught in the crush at the start, and Beverley King soon went to a break. Fortes and Wee Wrack began best, but at the end of two furlongs Golden Mist took charge from Woe Wrack, Lady Antrim, and Fortes. With a round to go the leaders were Golden Mist, Wee Wrack, Cadiz, Jean Drusns, Lady Antrim, and Purveyor, and racing up the hack Cadiz and Golden Mist were carrying on from Lady Antrim, Jean Drusns, Purveyor, mid Colene Parrish. At the top Golden Mist assumed command again from Cadiz, Jean Drusns and Colene Parrish, and as they straightened for home the favourite

TIMARU TROTTING CLUB

CUP TO RECESS fSpecial to Daily Times) TTMARU, March 14. The Timaru Trotting Club experienced a rather boisterous day for its autumn meeting to-day. a hot nor’-wester early in the afternoon suddenly giving place to a strong southerly. The track was slightly soft at the outset, but quickly dried, and later times were fast considering the high wind. • The totalisator handled £10,095, compared with £12,395 last March. The Timaru Cup was won by Recess, who was successful in the principal event at the January fixture. Supertax won the sprint race in a thrilling finish, which was complicated by Craganour coming home brilliantly after breaking at the start. The favourite, Southern Chief, after encountering plight trouble at the start, quickly raa to the front in the Futurity Stakes., and appears to possess all the qualifications of a high-class pacer. A most impressive performance was registered by Pot Luck in the Seadown Handicap, and although he has incurred a penalty in the Wyndliam Cup he still seems entitled to start favourite in that race.

NOTES ON THE RACING (Special to Daily Times) PAEROA. March 14. Conditions were very favourable for the opening of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s meeting at Paeroa to-day, and there was some attractive racing. The each-way favourite. Golden Blonde, scored narrowly in the Karangahake Handicap from the moderately fancied Palustre, who paid a fair price for a place. Summary led early and then gave way to Palustre, who showed the way into the straight to Golden Blonde, Summary, Melvanui, and Marjory Daw. Once in line for the judge, Golden Blonde ran up to Palustre, and in a sustained tussle she won by a short head. Marjory Daw battled on to get third, a length and a-half away, and Golden Sheila was fourth, followed by Athea, Chaytor, and Raepata. Palustre displayed definite improvement, running on much better than formerly. Having his first race over fences, Scotch Nation scored an impressive win in the Handicap Hurdles. Modern Maid led over the first two fences and then gave way to Scotch Nation, who piloted the field out of the straight, with Modern Maid, London, and Huskie following. Just after passing the five furlongs Huskie ran up second, and at the straight entrance he was just behind Scotch Nation, with London, Clan Ronald, and Modern Maid closest of the others. Nearing the last fence Huskie made an effort, but Scotch Nation jumped away and had no difficulty in beating him by two lengths and a-half, London was half a length away third, and Clan Ronald was almost in line fourth, with Roxy, Royal Dispute, and Booklaw next. Scotch Nation gave a fine display for a beginner, and he should be a good performer over fences when his powers are fully developed. It was with a fine finishing run on the outside that the each-way favourite Con Fuoco scored in the Netherton Hack Handicap. Quaint attempted to lead all the way, and she was still in charge entcrino the straight from Leo Colossus and Wind, with Ringshot running up fast on the outside, and Light Comedy just behind. Once they straightened up Leo Colossus, Day Wind, and Light Comedy made efforts, and Arawa Rose closed up on the rails, only to be checked. A great finish was in progress when Lon Fuoco flashed up on the offtside to score brilliantly by a neck from Leo Colossus, who defeated Full of Scotch by a bead. Light Comedy was almost in lino fourth, with Day Wind, Ringshot, Quaint and Hunting Maid all close up. Con rnoco was very confidently ridden, and his rider was content to allow him to remain near the rear until reaching the straight, lull of Scotch and Arawa Rose did not have th Slipptng f the'field approaching the home turn the light-weight, Bonny Gay, scoied decisively in the Ohinemuri Cup. Red Flame, who coveied a lot of ground, was wide out and a bead away third, and Johnny Walls was fourth. Glenation, after being second halt waj down the straight, was fifth, followed by Le Chasseur. Gay Sister appeared to be Ail 1 ou tsidcr', y Lillie Ruse, attempted to win all the way in the second division, but Matoru was close behind him at the turn and had no serious difficulty in boa - ing him home by half a length. Uvllaios always well placed, battled on to get thud a length and a-half away v and King Theo, who was fairly wide out at the turn, vveakcned slightly near the end to be fourth. The each-wav favourite Namakia was successful in the Paeroa Handicap, in which there was a great contest for the minor places, about six horses finishing almost in line. Namakia and Lucidus were quickly in the lead from Refresher and Tin Lap. who went hack in the middle stages. Entering the straight Namakia and Lucidus were still together in the lead from Bellkyrian, coroms, Puss Moth (outside), and Royal Secret. Namakia held an advantage inside the distance, and she stayed on to win by a short neck from Royal Secret, with Bellkvrian a head away third. Kilberis, finishing well on the outside, was another head back fourth, with Lucidus, Impasto, Beilbronoy, Puss Moth, and Tin Lap practically in line. The southerner Forest Glow proved victorious in the M'Guire Steeplechase, in the second round Golden England was in command from Bells of Bow and Sorest Glow. Going along the hack Semiarch moved up third, and just as he looked like taking a hand in the contest he toppled over at the fence near the haltmile. Bells of Bow was in command at this stage, but she was headed near the borne turn by Golden England and Forest Glow who rose at the last fence together. Forest Glow finished the stronger to win by half a length from Golden England, with Spalpiko six lengths away third. Bells of Bow was a moderate fourth, with the others well beaten. \n outsider,. Blue Needle, was responsible for a surprise in winning the Komata Handicap, paying over a score. Lornacre, Torch, and Sir Tommy were the smartest to begin, Torch and Sir Tommy

making the running and leading into the straight from Lornacre, Te Hai, Teak, Sweet Rose, and Blue Needle. _ The leaders came away from the fence in the straight, and Blue Needle dashed through on the inside to win by half a length from Mungacre, with Sweet Rose a head away third. Te Hai was almost in line fourth, and then there was a bunch com* prising Teak, Lornacre, Torch, Laudatory, Sing Lee, and Dancing Lady. THE CROMWELL MEETING

D. P. WILSON’S SUCCESSES (Special to Daily Times) CROMWELL, March 14. The Cromwell Jockey Club was unfortunate in respect to the weather for the concluding day. Before and after midday a heavy north gale raged, and about 2 pm. heavy rain set in and continued for over an hour, later giving place to a bitterly cold southerly. Despite this, the attendance showed- a substantial increase on the second day last year, being the best for some years. For the two days the gate receipts showed a slight increase on laet'year’s figures. The unfavourable conditions affected the totalisator business, but despite this £sllß was handled for the two days, against £5264 last year. To-day’s figures were £IOO down on last year. The fields were bigger than on the opening day, and some good racing was again witnessed. D. P. Wilson established something of a record by winning four of the five gallops to-day, a double with Surge and a race each with Fireguard and Mary Pratt. It was a well-conducted meeting, and generally was a marked succses. Following are the results: — BENDIGO HACK HANDICAP, Of 60sovs. One mile. 1 — D. i?. Wilson’s FIREGUARD (Lord Warden—Kerb), 8.0 (R. The Otautau Meeting Nominations for the Otautau meeting are due to-day. Riverton Nominations Nominations for the Riverton meeting are due to-day. South Canterbury Meeting Nominations for the South Canterbury meeting, on March 28 are due to-morrow., “A Wilson Day " It was a “ Wilson Day" at Cromwell on Saturday. “D. P." won four races with Fireguard, Mary Pratt, and Surge (two), and his brother, “ T. 1?.,” one'race with Rin Tin Tin. There were only \ five galloping races on the programme. Sungem Eighteen 1 months ago Sungem was a New Zealand Cup contestant. At the Maniototo non-totalisator meeting she is on the same handicap as Wyn, who so far has not succcecded in winning a maiden race. Silver Ring’s Programme It is not intended to take Silver Ring to Randwick for the autumn meeting, but he is to leave in July for the spring racing there. It is a pity that the chestnut is not going while in his present form, which he may not recapture next season. Takakua Back Again Takakua was brought back to New Zealand by the Wanganella, which reached Wellington from Sydney on Wednesday. After doing his early racing in New Zealand, Takakua was transferred to Victoria, where he was trained by M. M'Grath, and raced with some success. Takakua is owned by Mr J. Jameson, of Masterton. A Lengthy Spell Surella, who has bad 12 races, has been put aside until next season, when he is expected to develop into a useful sprinter. He has one first and three seconds to his credit, the win having been recorded at the Dargaville meeting at Avondale in the late spring. Surella is by Surveyor from Starclla, by Day Comet or Archiestown, and he may run on better when he is more matured next season. In Good Order

Since racing at the Takapuna meeting, where he ran a close second in the Wynyard Plate, nothing of a serious nature has been required of Valmint, though J. Thorpe has the chestnut gelding in capital condition. The form shown by this three-year-old during the present season ha« been decidedly promising, and there is every possibility that he will add to his record during the next few months. Australian Cup Winner Amalia is a bay mare, bred in South Australia in 1930 by Mr H. L. Standfield. She is by the highly successful imported sire Amalfi, who has been a regular gold mine to Mr T. H. M'Kay at nia Kambula stud, where Inchnquire is now standing. Amalfi is by Amadis from Mangaloni, by William the Third from Vampire, by Galopin. The dam of Amalfi was, therefore, a half-sister to the triple crown winner Flying Fox, and is inbred to Galopin in a similar manner to that famous horse. A sister to Firing Fox was Vane, grand-dam of tie New Zealand sire Weathervane.

English Jockeys Gordon Richards, who will be 33 next May, is likely to head the jockeys' list in England, again this year, but it is said his ambition of riding a Derby winner is unlikely to be realised this season., Ha has four or five retainers, but two-year-old fortn does not give a Derby chance to any of' the three-year-olds in the stables with which he is associated. C. Smirke, who is riding for the Aga Khan, is bound to be on something with a good chance, and Elliott, who won on Cal! Boy, will have an excellent mount in the French colt Abjer. S. Donoghue is likely to be on the Bossover colt, who may give him a chance of increasing his four Derby wins at Epsom and two substitute Derby wins at Newmarket, but there seems doubt as to whether the youngster mentioned will stay. Onlcaparinga Weight# The weights for the two big jumpers’ events at the Onkaparinga (South Australia) Easter meeting show Billy Boy to have been quite reasonably treated in the big steeplechase, but Shy has been overestimated in the hurdle event, and has since been withdrawn. The topweight in the Hurdles is Prismatic with 11.9, Prince Colossus is next with 11.0, and Blackford, the unbeaten Melbourne hurdler, in third place with 10.13. Shy# weight was 9.13. so no. risk was taken with him. Prismatic 11.9 is also topweight in the Centenary Great Eastern Steeplechase, with Heroic Prince 11.6, Fashion Star 11.2, King Colossus 11.0, and Blackford 10.13 followingißilly Boy has been allotted 10.9 and Membo has 10.5.

TROTTING NOTES

A Wyndham Prospect Norma Grattan is very well at present, and should race prominently at Wyndham. < An Embryo Champion The brilliant Jack Potts three-year-old Pot Luck continues on his winning way, and is now a firm favourite for the big race at Wyndham on Wednesday. Home Again F. Holmes and P. Brown, who attended the interdominion championships in Perth, returned to Christchurch on Thursday. Roi I’Or, who received injuries on the trip, is still in Adelaide, where he may remain for some time. Reminders Nominations of present yearlings for the Timaru Nursery Stakes, 1937, and for the New Zealand Trotting Stakes, 1938, will close on Thursday next. North Island Patronage It is expected that several North Island owners, including some from Auckland, will nominate horses for the Timaru Nursery Stakes, to be run at Washdyke in March, 1937. The Acid Test Stirling Lady is building up a good record on the southern circuit, but will have the acid test put on her at Wyndham, where she will, meet the brilliant Pot Luck on even terms.
