MANCHESTER UNITY
At the Manchester Unity,Hall, Stuart street on Monday evening the Loyal Valley Lodge held a function to do honour to the lodge medical officer. Dr C. North, who will leave shortly on an extended holiday .visit to England. P.P.G.M. Bro. C. H. RUssell welcomed a large attendance of members and their wives, stating that, the lodge officers had felt that an opportunity should be afforded members to meet their medical officer and show their appreciation of his services over a long period. The P.G.M., Bro. J. D. Cameron, P.D.G.M. Bro. B. J. Hey, and P.S. Bro. A. Sligo were present, and there were also representatives of sister lodges. During the evening several toasts,. Were honoured, the programme being interspersed with vocal and instrumental items. In proposing the-toast of “Our Guest,” P.G. Bro. F. Millier, the only original surviving member who joined the lodge rat its opening in 1883, stated .that during its 53 years’ existence the Valley Lodge had had only four medical officers, which was rather a remarkable record. He had personal remembrances of these doctors, and each had rendered good service. He Eald a tribute to Dr North, who had een an outstanding medical officer. On behalf of the lodge he asked him to .accept a presentation of a travelling rug, together with their very best wishes; for a pleasant holiday and a safe return. ,Bro. A. Sligo, provincial secretary, said that he had known their guest personally for many years and had found him. a man of deep human sympathy and understanding, ever ready to do a good turn to those in need. No lodge surgeon had ever given satisfaction to everyone, but he considered that their medical officer had undoubtedly given satisfaction to the great majority of members. Other speakers included the P.G.M., Bro. Cameron, and P.D.G.M., Bro. Hey. In the course of hi s reply, Dr North said that his associations with the friendly societies in Dunedin over many years had been most happy. As a lodge doctor he had great, admiration for the work of the lodges and the manner in which they carried out their good work. The lodge officers were ever ready and willing to help those needing assistance, and it was a pleasure to be associated with the lodge. Other toasts honoured were:—“ The Otago District," proposed by P.G. Bro. R, (Russell, and acknowledged by the P.G.M., and the district officers; and “Sister Lodges," proposed hy P.G. Bro. J. Mitchell, add responded to by P.S.’s 'Bros. J. List (Caversham) and A. G. Monk (Albion). An enjoyable programme ■ was contributed by Miss D. Sligo, Mrs W. Masters, and Mr J. Simpson (songs). Miss N. Bus Well and Bro. C. H. Russell (recitations), Stokes and son (instrumental selections), and Mr Eggers, (ventriloquist). Before closing, Bro, Russell conveyed a hearty vote of thanks to the performers, to Bro, Millier, who arranged the programme, and to the lodge officers, to whom much of the success of the evening was due. The monthly meeting of the , Loyal Middlemarch Lodge attracted a good attendance of members. The P.G.S. wrote advising that the lodge had won the efficiency competition for 1935, and that a visit would be made to the lodge oh March, 14, when the shield would be forr mally presented. The Social Committee was instructed to make suitable arrangement for receiving and entertaining the visitors from the city on that date. Ap invitation was received to attend a function at the Loyal Milton Lodge. The question of emblematical certificates was discussed, and it was decided to makh six awards. It was decided to make application for an award of a 25 years’ membership medal to P.G. Bro. A. Robertson. The annual balance sheet was considered and adopted and sick pay passed for payment. The question of appointing delegates to the annual district meeting was held over.
