A RUSE THAT FAILED

Boxes of matches were found on sale in Japan.recent.lv bearing the inscription “Down with Japan!” The matches, says West Africa, had come from China,* and there was the kind of outburst in the Japanese press one would expect. This led to diplomatic correspondence, and the discoverey that the matches had been manufactured in Japan for export to China. The astute makers felt certain that they would have a ready sale in that country. But the Chinese Government, anxious to give no offence to Japan, prohibited the vendin'* of such provocative goods in China. So back they went to Japan, to arouse the wrath of good patriots in the land of their origin. Thus poetic justice has been done. For once China has scored, but she has had a narrow escape. Those match boxes might have cost her another province.
