Ministerial. The Minister of Public Works (Mr R. Semple) will arrive in Dunedin from the north on Monday evening, and will proceed the following day direct to Invercargill. He will then go to Central Otago, and will return to Dunedin on Friday next, when he will receive several deputations. Mr Arthur Barnett travelled by yesterday's express from Dunedin to Christchurch. Mr M. Henderson, of the staff of the National Bank in Invercargill, has received notice of his transfer to Auckland. Dr W. N; Searle has been appointed registrar and obstetric tutor of Westminster Hospital, and also registrar of Chelsea Hospital for Women, London. Mr T. P. Laurenson, business superintendent for the Government Life Insurance Department, was a through passenger by yesterday's express for the north, on his return to Wellington. Colonel S. C. P. Nioholls, officer commanding the Southern Military District, returned to Christchuich by yesterday's express after visiting the artillery camp at Sutton. Mr W. A. Flavell (managing director) and Messrs Crosby Morris and G. Black (directors of the Westport Coal Company) travelled by yesterday's express to Christchurch, en route to the West Coast.

Mr Claude Kingston, of J. C. Williamson, Ltd. arrived from Auckland yesterday. Mr Kingston states that the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company is attracting record audiences in the northern city. The Union air liner Korimako left Taieri airport at 11.30 a.m. yesterday carrying the following passengers:— Mrs Butler (for Christchurch), Mr S. C. Sutherland (for Wellington), and Mr L. Mangham {for Palmerston North). The Karoro arrived at 12.50 p.m. with the following passengers: —Messrs N. Leecher, J. Nancarrow, K. Brownjohn and Fraser (from Palmerston North), Mr C. Russell Smith (from Blenheim), Miss I. Spencer, Messrs F. M. Maefarlane, R. 0. Pomeroy and Baines (from Christchurch).

A Press Association message from Melbourne states that M. Maurice de Abravanel, who at present is directing and conducting operatic productions for the Australian Broadcasting Commission, has accepted a conductorship with the Metropolitan Opera House, New York. He will leave Australia about the end of May. At the conclusion of the Mornington School Flower Show on Thursday opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mr George Swan, first assistant, who has been transferred to Wakari School as headmaster. During his four years at Mornington Mr Swan has rendered highly efficient service as a teacher, as a choirmaster, and for „a term as acting headmaster, and as a citizen is highly respected in the district. On behalf of the School Committee, Mr A. G. Osborne (chairman) presented Mr Swan with a Loewe pipe and case as a token of the good fellowship that has always existed between Mr Swan and the committee. Mr G. A. Turner (headmaster) also eulogised Mr Swan's excellent qualities, and regretted his departure from Mornington. Mr Swan feelingly acknowledged the sentiments and gift of the committee. " The concluding session of the training class instituted by Mr W. ShakespeareBinks, the psychologist who has been lecturing and instructing in Duncdm during the past few weeks, was marked by expressions of friendliness between teacher and pupils which was highly gratifying to all concerned. After the final iessons had been delivered, Mr A. Ibbotson, on behalf of the members of the class, over, 300 in number, made presentations of greenstone articles to Mr W. Rhakespeare-Binks, Mrs Shake-speare-Binks and Mr George Gilmore (general manager of the Universal Opportunity League, under whose auspices the lectures are being given). In handing over the gifts, Mr Ibbotson referred to the esteem and affection which had grown up between the members of the class and their tutor and his associates, to whom he conveyed the heartiest expressions of goodwill. Each of the recipients feelingly replied and the proceedings closed with the singing of " For They Are Jolly Good Fellows and cheers for all, including " the junior Shakespeare-Binkscs and the junior Gilmore."
