THE SAFETY OF THE ROADS

TO THE EDITOR Sib.—lt was with great pleasure that I read Mr Semple’s statement of his determination to reduce road accidents in the Dominion, and I endorse every word he said. Speeding motorists are a menace to the public, and should be severely dealt with. Even in our own little district we are afflicted with the “ road hog.” Only 10 days ago a serious collision occurred when one of our local “road hoes” cut a corner at a madmans pace and collided with a car driven by an elderly gentleman. It was a miracle that no one was hurt. But why wait Batil » fccioua or fatal accident happens,

before taking proceedings against these “road hogs"? A term of imprisonment with hard labour might cool their heated blood, and their licences should be permanently cancelled. Only responsible and level-headed people should receive drivers licences, as the safety of the public should be guarded at all times, and a parent could then feel that his child was safe when sent on an errand, or when going to and from school. As things are at present, no one is safe to take a walk along the roads, as apparently the "road hogs” are under the impression that the roads are made expressly for them. —I am. etc., Anh Road Hoo.
