The Tale Gallery in London, which is to lend 60 pictures, all of high quality, for the opening of the new National Gallery in Wellington, is exercising its authority to lend pictures quite freely nowadays. It has sent a score of representative British pictures to the Embassy in Paris, and is arranging to lend other pictures to Government offices. It is hoped that arrangements will be made to show the collection for Now Zealand in other cities of the Dominion before it is returned to England, and according to a London journal, the question of sending a few good pictures on loan to New Zealand every year is under consideration. To increase the use of tobacco, a State monopoly in Austria, smoking by public officials during working hours is being encouraged.
