“ Dollar,” Onmaru.—The cost of sending two dollars to America will lie 11s 3d, and the only way of transmission is by money order, which can be obtained at the Post Ofllce. “ Wants to Know," Morninglon. — (I) The words appear in Sir Edward Bulwcr-Lytton’s “ Richelieu,’' act 2, scene 2 “ Beneath the rule of men entirely groat The pen is mightier than the sword." (2) The Whalers’ Rock (Te Umukurl) is shown on the chart of Otago Harbour as Black Head, situated al the old Kail: jetty. The jetty has, of course, disappeared, with the once-populcus residences at the Maori Kaik. In Maori " umu ” Is “ oven ” and “ ktirl ” Is “ dog.” Liberally translated Umukurl may mean " oven in which native dog was cooked ” or " oven in which to cook dog.” The name of Whalers’ Rock was given because Hie spot was used as a landing place for the whalers with their catch. Captured whales wore anchored to iron spikes driven into the rock and some try-pots were located there. The rock is really part of the mainland and runs out into fairly deep water. It was therefore a most convenient lauding place for the whalers.
